St Piran League East round-up

LAUNCESTON reserves were the only winners of the three Post area clubs to take to the field on the opening weekend of the newly-created St Piran League (East).

The Clarets won 4-1 on the 3G pitch at Saltmill against Saltash Borough thanks to a hat-trick from Mark Elvidge and an own goal.

Bude Town started life under new manager Josh Allen with a 4-0 defeat at home to last year’s East Cornwall Premier League champions St Austell Reserves at Broadclose Park. Kieron Bishop netted twice while Cam Bidgood and Kieran Barrett also scored.

Morwenstow’s first foray into Step Seven started in disastrous fashion as they were thrashed 10-2 by last year’s Duchy Premier League runners-up St Mawgan.

Although the visitors started the better, the Greens took a tenth minute lead as Gary Walter’s crossfield pass under pressure found Norman Foster, who played in Harry Savage to round the goalkeeper and slot home from close range.

St Mawgan equalised on the half hour through Tom Jayne’s deflected strike, before the North Cornwall side went back in front as a long ball down the line found its way to Tom Denford, who played the ball across the box to Foster, who buried the ball into the back of the net.

Any hopes of a half-time lead were dented in the 42nd minute as Aaron Hawken bent in a free-kick from 18 yards.

At 2-2 the game was there to be won but the match was over as a contest by the hour as Craig Allen scored the first of his five in 27 minutes.

He’d notched his hat-trick in the space of six minutes from the 51st minute while substitute Bonar Maull scored in the 64th minute.

Sam West scored twice in the final ten minutes as the Morwenstow defence collapsed.

They’ll hope to record their first home win of the season on Saturday when St Dennis Reserves make the long trip up the A39.

Callington Town reserves’ Friday night clash with their Wadebridge Town counterparts at Bodieve Park was called off due to a waterlogged pitch.
