LOCAL football supporters will have another competition to follow as the Moore Cup is making a return.
Having started in the early 1970s, the competition which was started by Frank Moore in memory of his brother Harry, is organised by Holsworthy AFC, the club Frank and Harry were lifelong supporters of.
The brothers farmed at Rydon Farm which is now The Rydon Inn, situated as you leave the town on the A3072 towards Bude.
The competition kept running until the Kingsley League folded nearly a decade ago, but the Magpies’ committee has decided to relaunch the cup with eight teams, the hope being that many more will participate for the 2026/27 season.
Clubs eligible are at Step Seven and below (North Devon League, St Piran League and Devon and Exeter League) and to make the quarter-finals more exciting, they will be played over two legs before the semi-final and final will be played at Upcott Field, home of Holsworthy AFC.
The draw sees some intriguing match-ups.
Holsworthy Reserves of the North Devon League Premier Division (Step Seven) take on their Bude Town counterparts from St Piran League Division Two East (Step Nine) who are top of the table having won six of their nine outings. The first-leg is at Broadclose Park.
St Piran League Premier Division East outfit North petherwin will start as favourites when they take on North Devon League Senior Division side Shebbear United.
Petherwin are at home first but are mid-table at Step Seven, while Sheb are having a tough season in terms of results at Step Nine.
An all North Devon League battle sees Bradworthy host Hartland in the first-leg.
Hartland might be in the Premier, but they are struggling towards the bottom, while Senior Division leaders Bradworthy could have another trophy-laden year having restarted last season.
The other tie sees North Petherwin’s league rivals Kilkhampton, who are the highest-ranked side in the competition at present, visit a Halwill side who have a squad full of players who have played at a higher level.
