TRURO City assistant boss Stewart Yetton felt his side were ‘good value for it’ as the Tinners got their National League South campaign off to a flying start on Saturday in National League South with a comfortable 2-0 victory over visiting Maidenhead United.

The Cornishmen are looking to bounce back to Step One following relegation last term and dominated the first half against last year’s play-off quarter-finalists, racking up plenty of chances in the process.

They nearly went in front when visiting defender Miles Welch-Hayes headed against his own crossbar, before Tyler Harvey rattled the woodwork soon after.

However, it was two scruffy goals which were finished off by Harvey and Will Dean that gave the hosts a handy cushion.

On 25 minutes, goalkeeper Jordi van Stappershoef dropped a ball at the feet of Harvey who made no mistake, before it was 2-0 just after the half-hour mark when Luke Jephcott’s corner wasn’t dealt with and Dean crashed the ball home.

Although the visitors had their moments after the break following a change in formation, th closest they came was when Josh Umerah scored, only for referee Will Briers to rule it as handball.

Truro held on relatively comfortably in the latter stages to the delight of the majority of the 1,756-strong crowd.

Speaking afterwards to the club website, Yetton said: “We’re very pleased to start off with a win, I thought we were good value for it.

“In the first half we were excellent and should have probably have come with a couple more goals if we were a bit more clinical. But we’d have taken 2-0 at half-time, and although it was difficult for 20 minutes or so in the second half when they got the breeze behind them and brought another big man on, I thought we saw the game out well come the end.”

Yetton also admitted they need to make better use of the windy conditions at the Truro City Stadium.

“We appreciate set-pieces here can be a massive advantage and it’s something we’ve worked on a bit more this pre-season as last year we came up short a few times and probably should have scored a few more goals. But today it fell for us and we said to the boys even if they’re dirty goals from three or four yards, they all count.”

Truro are on their travels to Chelmsford on Saturday and Yetton admitted Saturday’s win was a relief for their recent endeavours.

He concluded: “We said to the boys beforehand that they’ve worked very hard in pre-season, but what we didn’t want to do after such a good pre-season both results and performance wise, was to go out there on the first day and not build upon that.

“It’s always good to get the first one on the board as every away game in this league is tough, so it’s nice to have taken the pressure off a little bit, and we go can go there and have a good go at Chelmsford next week.”
