FAVOURITES Falmouth Town are through to the last eight of the Cornwall Senior Cup despite being made to work hard by a resilient Wadebridge Town at Bickland Park last night.
The two-league lower Bridgers held out until midway through the first half when Luke Barner netted, and Falmouth - in the top half of Southern League Division One South - had to wait until 19 minutes from time for top-scorer Oscar Massey to beat Ollie Sidey after good work down the right from Barner.
All three Western League Premier Division sides in action also progressed, but not without a fright.
Newquay – chasing the play-offs at Step Five – hosted a Dobwalls side second bottom in South West Peninsula League Premier West.
The Dingos kept the home team quiet in a first half that ended goalless, but conceded twice in the opening half-hour after the break via Callum McOnie’s deflected shot and a fine team goal which saw Connor Paine slot home after Louis Price flicked McOnie’s pass around the corner.
Dobwalls, however, have shown signs of improvement in recent weeks and roared back to level with five minutes remaining through attacker Elian Causon and defender Tyler Copp.
Then step forward Jack Bray-Evans. A counter-attack saw a player sent through, and although the initial effort was saved, the well-travelled frontman tucked the rebound into an empty net.
Torpoint Athletic continued their excellent recent form by putting eight past hosts Launceston at Pennygillam.
The Point led after 10 minutes via skipper Elliott Crawford’s free-kick which was added to eight minutes later by defensive partner Callum O’Brien who headed in Sam Morgan’s cross.
And within four minutes it was all but game over as Joe Rapson slotted in a penalty after he was fouled.
The attacker then completed his treble before half-time, firstly beating Howie Evans to give Morgan a second assist on 25 minutes, before he secured his hat-trick six minutes before the break with a goal of his doing, beating a defender before lashing home.
Torpoint boss Dean Cardew emptied the bench early in the second half, but it was Ryan Downing that made it two hat-tricks in the space of three days, the first of which came just 17 minutes from time.
Liskeard Athletic bounced back from their weekend disappointment at home to Wells City by scraping past an impressive Sticker outfit in extra-time at Lux Park.
Sticker put six past the Blues’ neighbours Dobwalls on Saturday to move within five points of Premier West leaders Penzance, and although they fell behind early in the second half to an own goal, Sol Wilson forced extra-time right at the death in the third minute of injury-time with a tap-in from a corner.
However, Liskeard’s attacking options eventually proved the difference as within four minutes of extra-time starting, mercurial midfielder Max Gilbert beat Harry Ashton, and right at the end the Blues added a third via George Newton’s individual effort.
Two of the top four in Premier West met at Poltair, but it was AFC St Austell that saw off Callington Town 3-0.
The Lillywhites hadn’t played for over a fortnight due to the weather and having last Saturday off, but led after 27 minutes through defender Kieran Powell, and they went into the break with a two-goal cushion as Callum McGhee beat Jake Mead-Crebbin on 44 minutes after James Ward had a header cleared off the line.
Callington had their moments, but it was game set and match at the start of injury-time as frontman Ryan Richards added the third.
There are still three ties to be played, starting with tonight’s clash between Premier West rivals Mousehole and Bude Town (7.45pm).
St Mawgan’s home date with Camelford was switched back to next Wednesday, while Hayle will host Western League high-flyers St Blazey on November 25.
