JACK Lawrence’s late double gave the Camels their second successive league victory at Mount Wise.
Reg Hambly’s side had beaten Western League Division One high-flyers Ashton & Backwell United on Saturday in the second qualifying round of the FA Vase as well as Liskeard Athletic four days previously, and had the better of the early stages, although a couple of speculative efforts from the in-form Bobby Hopkinson were as close as they came.
The deadlock was eventually broken on 39 minutes. Recent signing Kian Burns whipped in a superb cross from the right which was headed into the ground and past Josh Gilbert by Ed Harrison from eight yards.
The Camels were left furious with the referee shortly before half-time. A brilliant, weaving run from Burns from halfway saw him slalom his way past the defence before being brought down by Gilbert.
However, referee Oliver Willcocks played on, much to the annoyance of the visitors.
The second-half started in the same vain with Hopkinson and Burns going close from the edge of the area.
Newquay slowly worked their way back into the contest and levelled on the hour as a good move down the left saw the cutback find Alex Cole, who sidefooted past Luke Gwillam from 15 yards.
The Peppermints now sensed their chance and took the lead on 68 minutes thanks to Cole’s superb strike from the edge of the box.
Shortly afterwards Matt Andrew missed a tough chance to equalise when his shot from a tight angle went just wide, but on 80 minutes Lawrence showed his opportunism as a goalmouth scramble ended with the former Wadebridge striker smashing the ball home.
Camelford’s endeavour was rewarded with two minutes to go.
After several passes, and Hopkinson challenging, the ball dropped for Lawrence to smash his shot into the top corner from 12 yards and win them the game.

Callington Town 1
TEN-man Camelford made it four successive wins in all competitions with a 3-1 victory over Callington Town on Friday night.
The Camels had secured league victories at Liskeard and Newquay as well as beating Ashton & Backwell United to advance into the first-round of the FA Vase in the space of a week, and a dominant opening 45 minutes set them on their way.
A trademark Bobby Hopkinson free-kick from just outside of the box put them in front after 13 minutes, before he was denied from the same sort of distance by a superb tip on to the crossbar by goalkeeper, Sam Borthwick.
Callington were given a way back into the match on 20 minutes as defender Adam Jenkin was adjudged to have been the last man when committing a foul, and was sent-off despite the hosts being convinced that Martin Haynes was there to cover.
However it didn’t make much difference, as within 15 minutes teenager Kian Burns continued his superb form since joining earlier this month by hammering into the top corner from ten yards.
Five minutes before the break, Camelford went 3-0 up as defender Leighton Carhart headed home a Hopkinson set-piece.
With the wind in their favour, the visitors were still in the game and reduced the deficit on 57 minutes as left-winger Tommy Norton cut in and fired past Luke Gwillam from 15 yards.
But despite having ten men, the Camels created the better chances without grabbing a fourth, as Andy Boxall’s 25-yard drive shaved the angle of post and crossbar, before Borthwick pulled off a miraculous double save from Hopkinson and Burns.
Camelford were in Cornwall Charity Cup action at Godolphin Atlantic last night (Wednesday) and head to St Blazey on Saturday (3pm) looking to maintain their position in the top six.
