SOUTH WEST PENINSULA LEAGUE PREMIER WEST

Launceston 1 Penzance 5

THE Clarets returned home on Saturday, looking to build on important recent league wins at Dobwalls and Truro. Despite last week’s heavy rain the pitch was in good condition and comfortably passed a Saturday morning inspection.

Manager Simon Minett was forced to make a significant change at the back as regular keeper Howie Evans has gone travelling for a few months. Oliver Sidey, previously with Bodmin Town, took over in goal.

Penzance are enjoying another good season and arrived at Pennygillam looking to consolidate a position in the top four of the SWPL West.

After a quiet opening period, the visitors took the lead after half an hour through Ollie Butler. The Clarets looked to keep the first half deficit to a single goal but Lewis Caspall doubled the lead on the stroke of half-time, with a fine 22-yard drive.

Launceston resumed strongly and scored soon after the break. Striker Kian Berry was brought down and skipper Sam Tattersall scored confidently from the spot.

The Clarets pushed up but left themselves exposed at the back and were punished on the hour when top-scorer Charlie Willis, a constant threat for the Magpies, struck a fine shot from the left, giving Sidey no chance.

Penzance added two late goals, through Willis and substitute Ewan Trevains, to run out deserving winners, albeit by a slightly flattering margin.

The Clarets are improving but still lack the goal-scoring threat posed by the top sides.

They are next in action this Saturday when they entertain Sticker, having won 1-0 at Burngullow Park back in September.
