Saturday, January 5 Football Preview
THE first weekend of football in 2019 in the Post area promises to be a cracker after the Christmas break.
While Bude Town, Callington Town, Camelford, Launceston and Holsworthy were battling away during the festive season in their respective divisions in the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League, teams in the Mortgage Advice Bureau East Cornwall League, North Devon League, Macron Devon and Exeter League and the JJ Jones and Sons Duchy League were enjoying a well-earned rest.
However there is a packed Saturday ahead.
Camelford and Launceston will look to reach the last eight of the RGB Cornwall Senior Cup.
The Camels have a tough trip to fellow Premier Division side Bodmin Town, who they lost 1-0 to on Boxing Day, despite Bodmin finishing the game with nine men.
Launceston, who have a number of games to catch up on in the Premier Division to help them move away from the bottom two, welcome Division One (West) high-flyers Liskeard Athletic to Pennygillam (2pm), in what is sure to be a tricky tie for the Clarets.
In Division One (West) of the South West Peninsula League, Bude Town, who picked up seven points from a possible nine over the festive period, welcome fellow strugglers St Blazey to Broadclose Park (2.15pm). If the Seasiders can claim a third victory in four, they’ll move above the visitors in the table.
Liam Dart’s Holsworthy will look to bounce back from a difficult run of form when they travel to second bottom Bere Alston United.
The Magpies have dropped to ninth after picking up just one point from a possible six over Christmas, but will be confident of getting their top-six challenge back on track at the village side.
Holsworthy Reserves have a huge last 16 tie at home to Spreyton FC, in the A&S Paving Devon Intermediate Cup. Although the Crediton-based club ply their trade in Division Six of the Devon and Exeter League, it is just their second season as a club and they sit second. The winners will travel to Morley Rangers Reserves in the quarter-final on Saturday, February 9.
In the East Cornwall League Premier Division, there’s a local derby between Callington Town Reserves and their Launceston counterparts at Ginsters Marshfield Parc (2.30pm). While it’s quarter-final day in the Division One Roy Radford Memorial Cup as Morwenstow welcome St Blazey Reserves, St Minver go to Newquay Reserves and St Teath travel to St Stephen.
Lower down the Cornish football pyramid, the Duchy League returns with ten games scheduled for Post area clubs, including a big local derby in Division Four, as promotion-chasing Bude Town Reserves make the short trip to Week St Mary.
The Duchy League cup competitions resume with Boscastle welcoming St Breward and Tintagel entertaining St Newlyn East in the second-round of the KMD Developments Duchy Knockout Cup while Southgate Seniors are away to Dobwalls Reserves in the last 16 of the Shoeboy Duchy League Cup.
The North Devon League sees eight Post area teams in action, including a pivotal clash at the bottom of the Premier Division between Ilfracombe Town Reserves and Bradworthy.
Both Halwill teams are in action in the Devon and Exeter League with the first team welcoming Dawlish United in Division Two, while the reserves go to their Teignmouth counterparts in Division Four.
See next week’s Post to find out out all the scores.
