Cornwall FA Women’s Cup (semi-final)
Charlestown Ladies 0
Callington Town 2
GOALS from Sam Veal and Gemma Farley sent Callington into their third successive Cornwall Women’s Cup final by beating Charlestown 2-0 at an extremely windy St Mewan Park.
The gale-force gusts which were blowing sideways across the pitch made life difficult for both sides, but it was Charlestown who started brightest.
Callington eventually begun to get to grips with the conditions and play some neat football on the floor, but the final pass or shot was not forthcoming with the home side defending resolutely.
Eventually on 35 minutes the committed supporters from both sides saw their first real attempt on target, when Tori Marks found half a yard to let a fierce shot fly from the edge of the area. Thankfully for the visitors, Sara Rowe was alert in goal and made a decent diving save.
Callington eventually went close as Gemma Farley saw her effort from range whistle narrowly by the top-corner before wing-back Jodie Smith was denied.
The score remained goal-less at the half-time break with both sets of defences well on top.
The second-half brought about a change of shape for Callington and more traditional wide players employed in the form of Chloe Williams and Eleri Griffiths.
The pressure from Callington was starting to build and Marks was being kept frustrated at the other end with the resolute Amy Hemingway denying the rapid forward any space whenever the ball was played up to her. Then on 65 minutes Callington had their break-through as Eleri Griffiths was wiped out inside the penalty area and Veal stepped up to do the rest.
Callington had by this point introduced 16 year old winger Ellisha Davey for her debut and the youngster was impressive with her confident running and in-swinging crosses into the box.
On 75 minutes Callington wrapped up the win and their tricky passage to the final, as Gemma Farley whipped in a brilliant free-kick from 25 yards out.
The away side celebrated like it was the end of the match, as they probably knew they had done enough to make their third successive county cup final in three seasons.
Lucy Bounsall hit the bar late on for the visitors as the game drew to a close.
Callington will await the outcome of the other semi-final between Penryn and Bude Town, which was postponed to see who they will face in the final.
