Torridge Cup, First Round (Tuesday)

Bude Town 3 Shamwickshire Rovers 1

Bude Town overcame a resilient Shamwickshire side in an entertaining game that seemed to have everything on Tuesday night.

The home side looked quite disjointed in the first half and fell behind when a long ball forward from the back wasn't dealt with and their striker finished superbly from the edge of the box.

Bude had a couple efforts at goal, Harry Hopcroft stung the hands of the keeper with a drive from distance, one cleared off the line and a handful of other half chances. Forward Billy Hopcroft picked up an early injury and was replaced by Jake Gilbert before heading into the break at 1-0.

The hosts shuffled things at half time and came out the blocks with a lot more purpose. With some patient build up play and not forcing the ball so much, Bude equalised with some neat football into Jake Gilbert who finished confidently from the edge of the box.

They then took the lead when a well delivered corner was met by Gilbert again who stabbed the ball home from close range. The third goal was again some nice build up play by Harrison Swatton who delivered a great ball into the danger area and Ryan Hodge was on hand to finish at the far post.

Aled Thomas was given his marching orders with two soft yellow cards (one in each half). Aaron White was sin-binned late in the game following words said to the referee after a penalty was awarded. The resulting spot kick was superbly saved by Ty Rowe down to his right hand post.

A determined second half performance with lots of grit from Bude helped them progress into the next round of the Torridge Cup where they will face holders Torridgeside or Fremington at Broadclose Park.

Man of the match was chosen by Gary Clarke and awarded to Jake Gilbert who scored a brace and was a real handful up top.
