SOUTH WEST PENINSULA LEAGUE WALTER C PARSON LEAGUE CUP SECOND-ROUND

Bude Town 2 Helston Athletic 1

TEGA Olaosebikan’s brace saw Bude Town set up a North Cornwall derby at Camelford in the last 16 of the League Cup as they edged out Premier West rivals Helston Athletic at Broadclose Park on Saturday.

The Seasiders rested three key players in Jake Woodland, Billy Hopcroft and Harrison Swatton, but their solid defence stood firm under pressure against Helston’s youngsters.

Bude eventually took the lead midway through the first half as after the visitors lost the ball in midfield, Olaosebikan was played in down the right side of the box and he lashed a shot inside the near-post.

Helston equalised within a couple of minutes with a cross-cum-shot from Jack Mills that ended inside the near post, but they were nearly behind at the break as Nathan Colley lashed an effort narrowly over.

The second half was just as open with home keeper Leam Powell having to be alert on a couple of occasions.

However, in the 70th minute that man Olaosebikan again found some space behind the backline and put the Seasiders back in front.

Bude then defended superbly to deny Helston a chance of spot-kicks, including both keeper Powell and centre-half James Wheeler thwarting the advancing striker at the same time as he shot wide.

Boss Steve Hackett admitted it was a close contest, saying: “It wasn’t the most convincing win, but we will take it. The lads dug deep and a sign of a good side is one that isn’t at its best, but still grinds out the result.”

The two clubs meet again in the league on Saturday in West Cornwall (3pm).
