PLYMOUTH Argyle got back to winning ways on Saturday after they defeated Cambridge United 3-2 at the Cledara Abbey Stadium.

The Pilgrims got themselves in front with four minutes to go before half-time after Louis Appere headed the ball into his own net following a Xavier Amaechi corner.

Tom Cleverley’s side then doubled their lead five minutes after the interval, with midfielder Harvey White scoring from outside of the box for his third of the campaign.

Cambridge responded seven minutes later when Liam Bennett's cross found Sulay Kaikai at the back post who scored to halve the deficit.

However, Argyle’s two goal advantage was restored in the 74th minute when Bim Pepple converted from the spot after goalkeeper Jake Eastwood had brought down Will Evans.

The home side then scored a second goal four minutes from time through Shayne Lavery, before a Murphy Cooper save in the dying embers denied Bennett a last-gasp equaliser.

After the match, Cleverley said: “I’m really pleased because it was a massive win for us. Not many teams will come here and win that’s for sure.

“The first goal we conceded was really disappointing, but we showed good character to get control again and win the penalty.

“The second goal was equally as disappointing, but the players worked their socks off and fought for every ball.

“I though we looked solid for large parts and we didn’t let them build any momentum in the game. I’m really proud of the players and it’s another great away win.”

Argyle’s next game sees them welcome Leam Richardson’s Reading, who sit one point behind the Pilgrims in the Sky Bet League One table. The game kicks off at Home Park from 12.30pm.
