Verde Recreo Hockey League
Southern Two
Bude 1
Penzance 4
BUDE’S poor run of results continued despite a gutsy effort from yet another makeshift side as they ended up falling short to Penzance in extremely windy conditions.
Bude won the toss and decided to start with the wind behind them, but got off to the worst possible start as Penzance opened the scoring early on as a cross found an unmarked winger who slotted it home at the back-post.
Things went from bad to worse for Bude as the visitors extended their lead mid-way through the first-half as the North Cornwall side failed to sufficiently clear a short corner which was lifted home from close-range.
Bude composed themselves over the interval and came out fighting; dominating the opening phases and a swift and well-worked counter attack was neatly finished by the returning Henry Gwynn-Thomas.
Bude continued to push hard for an equaliser which resulted in a very open and exciting second-half; the whole defensive unit dug deep and worked tirelessly to keep the Penzance counter attacks at bay but all was in vain as late on they scored a third with an almost carbon copy of their first goal.
Gwynn-Thomas earned a well-deserved man-of-the-match for his superb work-rate and motivation, keeping Bude going all the way to the end but Penzance had the last say as the final touch of the game agonisingly rolled slowly just inside the goal off goalkeeper’s Andy Davis’ smart, low stick save.
Tenth-placed Bude are away from home this Saturday as they head to Exeter University to tackle Isca C (midday).

White Eagles 3
Bude 0
BUDE travelled to Tiverton on Saturday to face White Eagles and fell to a 3-0 defeat.
The game started well for the visitors with Tammy Snowsill making crucial tackles to hold the middle well and distribute the ball, with Lucy Storry making excellent runs with the ball.
However they went behind as White Eagles gained possession and hit a hard ball down the line onto a high attacking player, only for them to drag it wide and slip it past the keeper.
Bude did not take this lightly and went straight back out with fighting spirit, with Cara Phillips making some fantastic runs into the home defensive area and Tilly Daniels and Ruby Bryant placing great pressure on the defending players.
With great defensive work from Louise Shepherd the ball was distributed well, alongside Clarey Westaway channelling her players along the left side to block them from entering the defensive 23-metre area.
White Eagles were left puzzled as an incredible passage of play saw a home player played in one-on-one, keeper save it and Eve Langman clear it off the line, but the umpire blew for a penalty flick.
But not to be denied, Amy Gear dived away to her left to save it with her hand pad.
White Eagles unfortunately managed to find a gap again and slipped the ball past the post and in, making it 2-0. From this, Gear was injured and had to leave the pitch. Langman volunteered to put on the pads and held her own within the D and made some vital saves.
Despite being one player down, the visitors still held their own, with Anna Elliot and Charlotte Gist making some great interceptions on the wings and driving past their players.
White Eagles managed to scrape another goal within the last ten minutes to seal an emphatic afternoon’s work.
Bude welcome leaders Caradon to Budehaven Sports Centre this Saturday (2.30pm).
