WERRINGTON booked their spot in the quarter-finals of the Britannia Inn Hawkey Cup on Wednesday night following a 36-run victory at Wadebridge Seconds in Group A.

Despite being made to work hard with the bat in a total of 136-7, they had more enough as they set up a home quarter-final against Lanhydrock or Tintagel who meet on Wednesday night in a decider.

With the likes of John Moon, Paul Smith and Sam Hockin missing, the hard-hitting Dan Barnard was promoted to open and he got off to a good start by hitting two sixes off Charlie Ellis.

Adam Hodgson was the first to go, bowled for 10 by Jamie Beare, before Barnard went for an enterprising 33 off 24 balls when he missed a big shot against the off-spin of Alek Gill.

Sri Lankan pro Thulina Dilshan gave Beare his second wicket when he holed out to the off-side boundary (62-3), and although George Rickard (24 off 24) and Mark Gribble (25 off 27) got starts, they struggled to 119-6.

However, Zander Zambuni (11no) and Mark Taskis (7no) put on an important 17.

Wadebridge look a good bet to be in the promotion mix in Division Two East and needed a good start.

However, the dangerous Beare was stumped second ball for four off the wily Ben Smeeth (2-17) and from there wickets fell regularly as Barnard bowled Kieran Gill for a single and Sam Richards holed out off Mark Taskis to George Rickard.

Ryan Pooley made a run-a-ball 41, but a lack of boundaries meant they were always well behind.

Wadebridge required 59 off the final six overs with seven wickets in-hand which meant they had a chance, however Pooley holed out off Sam Smeeth’s first ball, and from there they slowed to just 100-9 as Smeeth (3-10) and Dilshan (2-6) shared five wickets.

Werrington will host the winners of the clash between Lanhydrock and Tintagel which takes place next Wednesday night (May 27, 6.15pm).
