Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League Division Five, Six and Seven East round-up – Saturday, May 16

JUST three of five scheduled matches in Division Five started, with two played to a finish, including Holsworthy Seconds’ trip to Newquay Thirds.

The Devonians’ bowling attack did a fine job after the hosts raced along to 64-0 as Ben Hutchings’ 5-38 from 10 overs plus 4-50 from the off-spin of new skipper Ryan Smith, saw Newquay bundled out for just 148.

However, that was more than enough as although Smith made 50 from just 31 balls including seven fours and three sixes, nobody else reached double figures bar opener Nick Ward’s 13.

Games at Luckett and Gunnislake meant eight points for the hosts as well as visitors’ Buckland Monachorum and Launceston Seconds, but nearby at Menheniot-Looe they started a 35-over game with visiting Lanhydrock Seconds.

Menheniot racked up 157-8 from 36 overs led by 35 from skipper Marc Wright and useful chip-ins from the middle and lower order, before 4-19 from just four overs from Reuben Crawford reduced the Bodmin-based side to 78-7 from 25 overs. Alfie Wilson made 25.

The other game saw Pencarrow make 165-6 at home to Bugle before the visitors were held to 149-9 in their 40 overs.

Far more cricket was played in Division Six East.

Previous leaders Bude were missing several for their home clash with Saltash Seconds and were beaten by seven wickets having mustered just 96-8 from their 40 overs, opener Mike Taylor making 40.

However, there was a proud moment for the club as two juniors – Mawgan and Taylor Davage – made their debuts, as did Chloe Hall who became the first lady to play for the Seasiders in a league match.

Werrington chairman Adam Paynter led from the front as the fourths eased to a home success against St Minver Seconds.

The visitors amassed 153 all out which included a rapid 48 from number three Jim Hall after openers Neil Kent (33) and Nigel Hocking (22) provided a platform.

Paynter – the seventh bowler used – took 5-2 from just four overs.

St Minver made the hosts work hard early on in the chase, but Paynter (58no) was joined by Matt Chatfield who eased to 37 not out from just 36 balls.

Simon Harrison struck 116 as Tintagel Seconds racked up 216-5 at St Austell Seconds who were in command when the game was abandoned.

Thirties from Andrew O’Kelly (36) and Neil Hann (30) gave the Knights a chance, but the Saints were 145-0 in the 21st over when play was called off.

South Petherwin Seconds were in charge at home to Grampound Road Thirds when the rain set in.

Opener James Cawsey led the way with 83 in their 36-over total of 237-2 which was boosted by Nick Gerry (42), Richard Watson (52no) and Ian Clements (38no).

Loanee Gareth Clements then took 3-7 from nine overs in response as the Roadies were 64-4 in the 23rd over.

Home games for the third teams of Luckett and Launceston in Division Seven East failed to start because of morning rain.
