LWC Drinks Cornwall Cricket League round-up — Saturday, July 21

WERRINGTON seconds ended Helston’s unbeaten record on Saturday by thrashing the County Division One leaders by nine wickets at Ladycross.

Cornwall Under 17s star Dan Barnard was dropped down to the seconds but responded with the fine figures of 3-10 off seven overs as he and fellow opening bowler Jordan Duke (3-42) combined to reduce Helston to 51-6 after being 40-1.

Darren Webber then took 4-8 from 19 balls to bowl the West Cornwall side out for just 77.

Although opener Ian Searle (11) was bowled by Steve Jenkin, opener Nicholas Adams and Ben Jenkin had no trouble knocking off the rest of the runs as they both ended up 31 not out.

Just a few miles away at Lawhitton, Launceston, who had won their previous three games to climb off the foot of the table, were on the wrong end of their heaviest defeat in recent memory as Redruth seconds left North Cornwall with a 246-run victory.

After sending the visitors into bat, Sam Pengelly (3-83) struck twice early to remove James Harris (14) and George Bolland (0) before Mark Jenkin (96) and the impressive Will Harris (145) put on a double century stand.

Steve Kevern (55 off 27) and George Harris (26no) added the late fireworks as only Brandon Forsyth (0-36) went for less than six an over.

In reply, opener Kevin Worth made 53 but the innings collapsed to just 116 all out in 29 overs with eight wickets falling to spin.

Wins for fellow strugglers Newquay and St Erme meant Launceston fell back to the bottom.

In the ECB Cornwall Premier League, Werrington enjoyed a comfortable afternoon’s work at winless Camborne.

After openers Ben Smeeth (24) and Adam Hodgson had put on 48, the rest of the innings centered around an unbeaten 68 from Mark Gribble with solid support from Paul Smith (31) and Nick Lawson (32) as they totalled 240-7.

In response, five of Camborne’s batsmen passed 20 but Smeeth’s 4-51 and two wickets apiece for Tom Dinnis (2-21) and Jono Baldock (2-29) ensured a shock was never on the cards as they eased to victory by 69 runs.

Callington fell to another defeat at St Just by four wickets but pushed last year’s runners-up for long periods at Cape Cornwall Road.

Nick Parker (43) and Andrew Jones (29) rescued the Callington innings from 91-6 to get up to 168 all out before reducing the home side to 21-2.

However St Just were put on their way to victory by Justin Stephens (47) and Daniel Lello (38) despite two wickets each for Chris Davies (2-54) and James Boundy (2-38).

While Callington were down at St Just, their second team eased to a vital 92-run victory over local rivals Menheniot-Looe at Moores Park in Division Two East.

Forties from Alex Robinson, Andrew Brenton and Toby Beresford-Power were the backbone of their 245-9 before bowling the visitors out for just 153 with Tom Neville (3-38) the main wicket taker although Brenton (2-23) and Robinson (2-33) completed fine games.

Just a couple of miles away, second faced third at the Chapel Field as Luckett beat Bude by just two runs.

It was the Brown show in the first innings as brothers Ryan (51) and Marc (57) both made fifties in Luckett’s 229-9 although number nine Jack Sleep made a match-winning 44, with James Findlay (4-51) and Matthew Williams (3-40) impressing for the visitors.

In reply, despite losing just six wickets, Bude couldn’t reach their target.

Openers Matthew Whitehouse (57) and Warren Rumble (40) put on a century partnership but ran into Jonathan Hoskin (4-40) and Mark Southcott (2-36), who applied the breaks superbly, sharing six wickets for 76 runs in 23 overs.

At six wickets down and with over 50 required to win off just a few overs, the visitors were up against it.

Matthew Mansbridge (46no) and Paul Williams (30no) put on an unbroken stand to get within sight of victory, but came up just short.

St Minver’s improvement into mid-table continued as they beat in-form Tideford by 66 runs.

Opener Andy Rathbone made 50 in their 173 all out with useful support from Will Durrant (25), Charlie Hawken (24) and Antony Ash (20).

Tideford lost regular wickets throughout with Hawken (3-16) and overseas player Warrick Rhode (3-9) sharing six dismissals between them.

In Division Three East, South Petherwin won by ten wickets away at Roche seconds (see above right) while Holsworthy were also emphatic winners, easing past Gorran’s 185 all out with nine wickets remaining. Sam Stacey made an unbeaten 90 with Jack May (60no) also in the runs.

Earlier, Matthew Shepherd and Rob Mitchell took three wickets apiece.

The Post area clash between Werrington thirds and Tintagel at Ladycross went the way of the visitors by three wickets.

Werrington made a below-par 183 all out with Trevor Dingle (42), Richard Stanbury (39) and John Moon (33) in the runs.

Tintagel skipper Ryan Pooley took 4-47 with new Australian import Hamish Robertson (3-47) collecting three wickets on debut.

In reply, opener Simon Harrison made 43 but it was former captain Jason Seldon (53) who guided them home with his second successive half-century.

Nick Oldaker (4-38) and Daniel Jenkin (2-35) shared six wickets.

In Division Four East, the top-of-the-table clash between Bude seconds and their Luckett counterparts at Crooklets went the way of the league leaders by seven wickets.

Luckett collapsed to 128 all out despite openers Martin Bude (45) and Richard Seeley (27) getting them off to a good start as slow bowler Mike Taylor took the brilliant figures of 5-18 from ten overs.

In reply, home skipper Gordon Wint showed his class to make an unbeaten 73 despite Ashley Small’s impressive 3-42 off ten overs. The win puts them 19 points clear at the summit.

Launceston seconds are now just 21 points off Luckett in second after hammering eight-man Delabole by 163 runs at Lawhitton.

David Cox made 125, his first ever league century with Tom Sandercock (33) and Seb Hockridge offering solid support in their 265-6.

In reply, stand-in skipper Adrian Pooley smashed a quickfire 46 while Jack Oulton was left unbeaten on 26. Spinner Ashley Taylor took 5-16.

Milton Abbot had another tough afternoon on the road as they lost by 125 runs at Grampound Road thirds.

Tom Rickard took 3-62 in the home side’s 278-5 before Jake Phillips made another half century (56) in their 153-9.

Werrington fourths won a thriller by just four runs at Tintagel seconds in Division Five East to continue their steady season.

After posting 171-9, thanks to 47 extras and Andrew Smeeth’s 38, they managed to close out the victory thanks in no small part to Brian Baker and Adam Paynter, who shared three wickets for just 47 runs from 20 overs.

For Tintagel, Tom Harris took 5-32 while Stephen Roach and Ben Lane made 44 and 32 respectively.

Gunnislake lost yet again, this time at home to St Stephens Saltash after managing just 140 all out while Launceston thirds lost by four wickets at their Wadebridge counterparts despite being bowled out for 74. Tom Davey took 3-26 to set up a closer finish than expected.
