WERRINGTON Cricket Club held their dinner and dance recently at Trethorne.

The Ladycross outfit enjoyed another steady summer with four Saturday teams, a ladies side and a multitude of junior sides.

The first team finished sixth in the ECB Cornwall Premier League, that after a tough start to the season.

The runs of Sri Lankan pro Thulina Dilshan – 733 in the league which was well over 100 more than anybody else – proved key, as did the wicket-taking of director of cricket Adam Hodgson who took 33 in the league, just two less than Helston’s Australian leg-spinner Harry Saunders. Opening bowler Dan Barnard took 22 wickets at less than four to the over.

Useful contributions from the rest also helped as they comfortably confirmed their top-flight status for a 22nd successive summer. Only St Just, who survived on the final day, have been in the division longer.

The seconds stayed by the skin of their teeth in a highly-competitive Division Two East.

Although St Austell Thirds were comfortably bottom, Werrington found themselves in a three-way scrap with neighbours Bude and St Minver, the latter eventually going down despite finishing level with the Seasiders.

Left-arm spinner Sam Smeeth’s first season in the third-tier was a superb success with 24 wickets at just over four to the over, while Tom Lyle (447 runs) was the star man with the bat.

The third team under the captaincy of Ian Worsnip were looking for an immediate return to Division Three East and weren’t far away at all, finishing third, seven points behind Duloe.

The fourth team had an up and down time of it in Division Six, but Ian Wills’ side were able to give plenty of opportunities with both bat and ball to the club’s promising youngsters and lady members as they make their way in the game.

A second summer of ladies cricket at Ladycross went well.

The softball side won their division, while the ladies ended third in the Cornwall Women’s Hardball League, just two points behind runners-up Redruth.

They won four of their seven games, one of which was cancelled due to the weather.
