Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League Division Two East round-up – Saturday, May 23

TINTAGEL produced one of their great recent victories by defeating a strong Callington Seconds side at Moores Park on Saturday.

The Greens – who were without skipper Matt Jolliffe, put in a fine performance in the field to dismiss the hosts for just 155 after home openers James Brenton (23) and Dan Davis (20) looked in ominous touch.

However, after the hosts reached 74-2, Gyles Reynolds (3-20) changed the contest as he took three quick wickets to make it 80-5.

Bits and bobs helped Cally give themselves half a chance as Leo Agacy (3-50) and Ryan Pooley (2-8 off 6.1) wrapped up the tail.

Callington have arguably the best attack in the league, but initially found it tough as Tintagel made their way to 68-2.

But the dismissal of Pooley changed the game as it became 101-7.

Tintagel’s fighting spirit then shone through as a combination of Minehan’s superb 24 not out coupled with extras and stoic resistance from Vedavyas Chowdare (6), Mark Luxton (4) and Rocco Reynolds (1no) gradually got the total within reach.

The penultimate over bowled by the otherwise excellent Ryan Hodge took 12 balls as Tintagel left with a one-wicket success.

Werrington Seconds are out of the bottom two after a comfortable 72-run success over their St Austell counterparts at Ladycross.

The visitors were on top early on before Marley May (33) and Tom Lyle rebuilt the innings.

Lyle – who made 72 from 107 balls – was then joined by Zander Zambuni who struck three sixes in his 40 as they closed on 205-8.

Werrington struck four times early on – led by Darren Webber’s 2-31, but in the end it was the Ian Searle show as the veteran swing bowler took 6-36 from nine overs as the Saints were all out for 133.

Holsworthy dropped to the foot of the table after a seven-wicket reversal at promoted Menheniot-Looe.

The Trees chose to bat at Fourgates and with Jack Greening (42), Aiden Gerry (17) and the hard-hitting Brendan Harris (20) all getting in, they looked on course for a sizeable score at 104-1.

However, Steve Kidd (2-24) and Mike Maiden (4-19) changed the contest as they shared six wickets for just 43 runs from 18 overs as the Devonians were dismissed for 161.

Holsworthy needed early wickets to have any chance, but after openers Pete Nance and Peter Swinford dug in before falling to Graham Wild (2-30), it was Lachie Embleton (50no) and Steve Kidd (44) that got the job done.

Bude had a tough afternoon at home to title-hopefuls Wadebridge Seconds who reached 243-4, aided by some shoddy home fielding. Earlier, David Sillifant took 2-36.

Sam Richards added 43 not out towards the end after runs from Paul Menhenick (54) and Ross McLachlan (45), but it was Kieran Gill’s superb 32 not out off just 12 balls that changed the complexion.

Wadebridge then never let Bude in with the ball and after slow bowler Alek Gill’s 2-20 from nine miserly overs, it was leg-spinner McLachlan that did the damage with 5-33 as the Seasiders capitulated from 38-1 to 78-9.

The last wicket pairing of Richard Dymond (11no) and Matthew Mansbridge (20) added 34 late on, but they earned just four points from the afternoon.
