Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League preview — Saturday, May 29

WERRINGTON have made two changes from last weekend’s defeat to Redruth for tomorrow’s ECB Cornwall Premier League clash at Truro.

The four-time champions lost several key players in the spring, and are currently winless from two games, as are this weekend’s opponents, meaning a win is vital at Boscawen Park.

Skipper Nick Lawson has bowling all-rounder Dan Barnard available after a weekend away, while John Moon is back from university to bolster the batting. They replace Mark Hodgson and the unavailable Tom Lyle.

Truro boast the likes of Cornwall captain Scott Harvey in their ranks as well as Indian overseas professional Rahul Dalal who was the leading run-scorer in the 2019/20 Ranji Trophy.

There’s also a big day for Werrington on Sunday as the club hosts Cornwall against Dorset in the 50-over NCCA Championship (11am). Former club captain Paul Smith has been included in the Cornish side despite living in Birmingham. Entry is free, while the bar will be open.

Callington host Camborne at Moores Park looking to secure back-to-back wins.

They pushed Penzance hard on the opening day before Harry Sawyers’ 6-12 at Grampound Road propelled them to a ten-wicket win after bowling the hosts out for 50.

Joe White names an unchanged side against a Borne side who will arrive in South East Cornwall buoyed by a one-wicket victory over Truro at Roskear last weekend.

Camborne name Somerset’s Lewis Goldsworthy in their side. The teenager has been batting in the middle order in the County Championship and has also been confirmed to play for Cornwall on Sunday.

Callington v Camborne —

Aidan Libby, Luke Brenton, Dan Davis, Kian Burns, Rhys Davies (wkt), Ollie Allsop, Joe White (captain), Sam Pengelly, Rob Mutch, Matt Petherbridge, Harry Sawyers.

Elsewhere in the division, champions Penzance visit Redruth, unbeaten St Just welcome Grampound Road, and St Austell host Wadebridge at Wheal Eliza.

In County One, fifth-placed Werrington seconds welcome their Redruth counterparts to Ladycross boosted by the inclusion of several players.

King’s College student Toby Ward makes his first appearance for several weeks, as does dad Nick. Mark Hodgson drops down from the ones, ensuring they have a strong batting line-up, and an extra spin option.

Bowler Cameron Wakefield is unavailable while Ian Searle and Keith Moore drop out of the side.

Redruth arrive in North Cornwall without a win to their name.

Fourth-placed Falmouth should prove too strong for bottom side St Austell seconds at the Hine Downing Oval, while mid-table battles see Gorran host Beacon and Newquay make the short trip to St Erme.

Division Two East

TINTAGEL go to leaders Grampound Road seconds looking to build on a superb win over high-flying Wadebridge seconds.

Skipper Ryan Pooley is missing several batsmen in Andy Boxall, Geoff Uglow, Jordan Burnard and Matt Richie, but can still name a strong team as the likes of Leo McDonnell and Martin Seldon come in, while former Wadebridge all-rounder Gyles Reynolds makes his debut in the middle order.

Bude, with four wins in a row, are currently third but face a tricky proposition when Roche visit Crooklets.

The North Cornwall side have beaten the league’s strugglers in recent weeks, but Roche themselves have their eyes on promotion come September.

Home skipper Warren Rumble makes just one change from last weekend’s ten-wicket thrashing of Menheniot-Looe as Chris Parkes comes in for the unavailable Wayne Adams.

Callington seconds are another side hoping to play County Division One cricket in 2022. They go to Holsworthy, who are enjoying a solid start to their first season in the third-tier.

Dan Furse replaces the absent Ryan Bridgeman for the hosts, while Callington head up the A388 with a typically strong side. Danny Carroll and Alex Robinson are unavailable, meaning James Moon and Martin Hunn come in.

Launceston haven’t played since May 1 due to the weather, while Tideford have only played once since then as they prepare to meet at the Port Eliot Estate Ground.

Launceston travel to South East Cornwall missing Dan Tilley, Peter West and Ethan Green, and will need a superb team performance to come away with the victory and pull further clear of the bottom two St Blazey and St Minver, who meet at the Philip Varcoe Sports Ground.

Tideford have also missed out on a chunk of cricket but welcome back Jamie King, Michael Burnett, Gregor Norster and Nick Pooley from last weekend’s 75-run loss at Roche.

Bottom side St Minver are 18 points adrift of Launceston, and desperately could do with winning at St Blazey. Both sides have yet to taste victory.

Marc Wright (capt), Luke Ripley (wkt), Tom Rogers, Mike Maiden, Ross Ripley, Ben Allsop, Justin Kidd, Steve Gliddon, Giles Francis, Stuart Nye, Sean Simmons.

In Division Three, leaders Callington thirds make the trip to their Werrington counterparts looking to maintain their winning start.

Last Saturday they beat St Austell thirds by eight wickets while Werrington’s local derby at South Petherwin was called off due to wet ground conditions.

Boconnoc are hot on Callington’s heels, and welcome South Petherwin to Deer Park.

Launceston seconds have three wins to their name already, and welcome struggling Bude seconds to Lawhitton. Bude have won just once, and are two points above second bottom Roche seconds.

St Neot make the trip down to Ladock looking to leapfrog their hosts with a convincing victory.

The other games see the derby between Roche and Bugle, while Newquay seconds face St Austell.

Luckett will hope to keep the pressure on early leaders Lanhydrock seconds when they make the short trip over to Menheniot-Looe in Division Four East.

Luckett eased past South Petherwin seconds last week, while Menheniot’s last three fixtures have seen just 19 overs of play.

Lanhydrock go to Pencarrow to take on third-placed Wadebridge thirds, one point clear at the top.

Menheniot were their opponents last weekend, but no play was possible due to a wet outfield.

South Petherwin will hope the return of a few in the first team will give their seconds a chance of being competitive in a division they have never previously competed in.

The bottom side host fellow strugglers Duloe in a pivotal clash for both, while elsewhere Buckland Monachorum host St Blazey seconds and Saltash St Stephens entertain Grampound Road thirds. Milton Abbot have the weekend off in the 11-team division.

Two Post area teams clash at Butts Field in Division Five East as Tintagel seconds welcome Werrington fourths.

Liskeard will look for back-to-back successes when they host Pencarrow, while leaders St Stephen tackle Tideford seconds at the Recreation Ground.

The other games see St Minver seconds versus Newquay thirds and St Neot seconds v Foxhole.

The reverse of last weekend’s fixtures are set for the six-team Division Six East.

Boconnoc are 18 points clear of second-placed Holsworthy before hosting Gunnislake, while Holsworthy make the short trip to Launceston thirds.

Menheniot-Looe thirds host Saltash St Stephens at Duloe in the other fixture.
