Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League round-up — Saturday, May 29

HARRY Sawyers had the remarkable figures of 6-12 as Callington annihilated Grampound Road by ten wickets in the ECB Cornwall Premier League on a day where the majority of the Cornwall Cricket League programme was played.

Play was once again effected the most in north and south east Cornwall where most games were either called off completely or started late.

Grampound Road versus Callington did get underway on time and after winning the toss, the home side’s innings couldn’t have gone any worse.

They did make their way to 42-2 thanks to ten from David Hoskings and Virendra Yadav unbeaten on 24.

Chris Roberts was bowled by Aidan Libby for eight, and from there, Sawyers ran through them with his leg-spin, finishing with 6-12 off five overs as ‘the Road’ lost seven wickets for five runs.

Callington then knocked them off without losing a wicket in just 8.2 overs as Libby made 38 and Luke Brenton 16.

There was a close contest at Werrington, although it was visiting Redruth that left North Cornwall with 17 points.

A wet outfield meant a 40-over game got underway at 2pm, with the Reds asked to bat by Nick Lawson.

Brothers Toby and Ellis Whiteford (29) added 50 before the former was caught by Tom Lyle off the miserly Ian Worsnip for 32.

From there on, Redruth never really pushed on as Werrington’s three off-spinners — Ben Smeeth (2-34), Adam Hodgson (2-8 off seven) and Mark Hodgson (3-21) — combined for seven wickets.

They ended on 132 all out with only Luke Johnson’s 25-ball 32 doing any damage.

That innings proved crucial in the long-run as Werrington fell nine short.

Redruth kept it tight from the outset as only four players managed double figures.

As wickets tumbled around him, Mark Gribble kept his head, and with four balls left, the Tron needed nine to win with two wickets remaining.

However was bowled by spinner Craig Johnson for 57 and Worsnip was stumped first ball, giving Redruth the points.

Elsewhere in the division, Camborne won by one-wicket against Truro at Roskear thanks to Liam Weeks’ unbeaten 70 in a chase of 137, while Tom Wells rescued Penzance once more as his 128 not out propelled them from 113-8 to 224-8 against visiting St Austell, who were all out for 133 in reply.

St Just convincingly beat Wadebridge at Egloshayle Road by 116 runs with Ben Stevens and Max Waller to the fore. They made 217-9 before Stevens’ 5-23 wrecked the Bridgers’ hopes.

In County One, all six games were played to a finish.

Werrington seconds gave Helston an almighty scare before an unbroken partnership of 77 between Ross Leathley and Guy Leathley saw the West Cornwall side chase down 156 with four wickets to spare.

Earlier, Ben Jenkin (55) and Rob Dymond (43) were in the runs.

At Hayle, Lanhydrock were convincingly beaten, despite the Towans outfit slipping to 33-3. Father and son duo Paul (73) and Matt Lello (65) put on 117 as they totalled 230-8.

James Franklin then ripped through the Bodmin-based club to take 5-32, before Ross Keast’s 23 got them up to 101.

Falmouth and Paul kept the pressure on the top two with wins away from home.

Paul beat bottom side St Austell seconds by 52 runs after posting 170-6 off their 25 overs, while Falmouth were four-wicket winners at Beacon, who had earlier made 181 all out.

Elsewhere, Gorran won by ten runs at St Erme and Newquay beat Redruth by only five runs.

In Division Two East, Launceston’s ground was again deemed too wet for play as they were rained off for the third week in succession, this time against Holsworthy.

Bude took advantage of Wadebridge seconds’ defeat at Tintagel to go second following a ten-wicket victory at Menheniot-Looe.

Menheniot were dismissed for just 111 thanks to Shaun Whitefield (4-27), Jack Horwell (3-19) and Matt Williams (2-15), before Warren Rumble (67no) and Matt Hookway (31no) knocked them off.

Tintagel earned a second win since promotion as Jonathan Labuschagne’s 79 set the platform to see them chase down 179.

In a 40-over game, Wadebridge had earlier made 178-8, with Sam Richards’ 58 the highest score. Jordan Blanchard (3-53) and Matt Pethick (2-40) were the pick for Tintagel.

Callington seconds are keen to get promoted, and in the end they managed to play a 20-over fixture with St Blazey at Moores Park.

Blazey amassed 119-5 in their allocation thanks to Keith Reid’s 51 and 20s from Rory Dixon and Daley McErlain.

Alex Mortimore (1-16) and Blaze Eigenmann (1-17) – on his second-team debut – went for just 33 runs off their combined ten overs.

Callington got over the line with eight balls to spare, skipper Toby May making 43.

St Minver nearly pulled off an upset at home to Grampound Road seconds but came up short by 18 runs.

Grampound were in trouble at 116-5, but veterans Steve Matthews and Sean Hooper took them to 198-6. Rob Hawken’s off-spin took 3-40 off 12 overs. Thirty-six wides didn’t help the home cause. Although Antony Ash, Archie Edwards and Max Brill, went cheaply, Ben Hawken (42) and Steve Hawke (32) attacked from the outset. But once they departed, only Tom Preston-Evans (17) and Rob Hawken (29) reached double figures.

The other game saw a depleted Tideford do well to hold Roche to 164-9, thanks to Chris Anderson and Dan Robotham sharing five wickets.

At 51-1 off 17 overs, the visitors had a chance. But Mark Trudgeon’s devastating spell of 6-16 wrecked their hopes, as they were eventually dismissed for 89.

Four games were played in Division Three East as Callington thirds continued their unbeaten start.

They swept aside a weakened St Austell thirds at Landulph by eight wickets.

St Austell could only muster 42 as Martin Hunn (6-22) and Toby Morgan (3-16) did the damage, before Toby Beresford-Power’s 22 guided them over the line.

There was an incredible game at Bugle as Launceston seconds won by five wickets.

Bugle made 224-8 off their 40 overs, although the visitors dropped openers Nathan Toms (79) and Paul Gribble (64) six times in total.

Once the stand was eventually broken, the brakes were applied as only Martin Hutchings, with a quick 32, got going.

Kevin Worth took 3-32 off four overs while teenager Shane Davey (2-26) bowled brilliantly without much luck.

In response, Sam Couchman took three wickets in as many overs, before former first- team captain Kevin Worth and Paddy Webber combined for a partnership of 175 for the sixth wicket.

Worth, who was dropped seven times, walloped an unbeaten 178 that included 16 sixes, while Webber provided a perfect foil for his 27 not out.

Unbeaten Boconnoc recorded an emphatic nine-wicket victory at Bude seconds.

Matt Whitefield made it back-to-back 50s as his 52, plus 22s from Andrew De Rosa and Lee Houghton, saw Bude make 159-6.

Finger spinners Joe Coates (3-31) and John Niblett (2-33) applied the breaks.

Steve Marchant (59), Niblett (56no) and Jamie Coates (14no) knocked off the runs without fuss to maintain their unbeaten start.

The other game saw Newquay thrash Ladock, chasing down the visitors’ 124-8 for the loss of just two wickets.

South Petherwin v Werrington thirds and St Neot v Roche seconds were both called off.

Two games went ahead in Division Four East, including Luckett’s seven-wicket win over South Petherwin seconds at Chapel Field.

Michael Clements hammered seven sixes in his 78, but besides Adrian Martin’s 22, no-one else really got going as they totalled 146 all out in 35.3 overs.

Adrian Berry was the pick of the home attack, claiming 5-25 off ten overs.

Luckett reached the target in 33 overs, three down. Martin Budge made 55 with Berry (30no) and Adam Piper (28) also in the runs.

There was a thriller at Baxter Park as Wadebridge thirds beat Milton Abbot by one run.

Reduced to 35 overs, Oliver Derry was the only Bridgers batsman to pass 20 as they posted 136-8.

Tom Rickard (2-24) and Steve Payne (3-24) shared five wickets.

Opening bowler Kieran Gill (4-21) claimed four early wickets as the hosts looked to be sliding to a heavy defeat.

However, opener Paul Crocker (44) and Tom Rickard (50) had other ideas.

But once they departed to Tom Clarke (4-24), the lower order failed to get going as they came up short by a run. The other three games fell foul of the weather.

Just one fixture went ahead out of five in Division Five East as Liskeard eased to victory at Newquay thirds.

Andrew Cobb clobbered 12 fours and four sixes in his 95, while Matt Wallace (37) and Brian Phillips (21) also contributed well in their 197-9.

In response, Newquay slipped to 63-6 before scrambling up to 136 all out.

Sam Rogers (3-36) and James Cobb (3-32) did the most of the damage for the Lux Park outfit.

Boconnoc extended their lead in Division Six East, by virtue of a seven-wicket victory over Gunnislake at Deer Park.
