TINTAGEL Cricket Club held their annual end of season dinner at their Butts Field home on Friday, October 4.

The evening started with a three-course meal which included a carvery supplied by ‘Proper Hog’, desserts made by the ladies and cheese and biscuits.

Speeches followed the dinner, and started off with a few words from chairman Alan Sergeant, who also announced the Club Person of the Year to be Caroline Fry for her sterling work as tea lady and organiser of events.

Jordan Burnard followed with his first team speech, as did David Lane for the second team, finesmaster Jason Seldon followed with his top five funny moments of the year and then Ryan Pooley announced the club’s fantasy cricket winner to be Dave Burnard, and presented him with a bottle of wine.

On the field, Tintagel enjoyed an excellent 2019 season with both senior sides finishing in the top six of their respective divisions in the Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League.

The firsts recovered from a poor start to finish fifth in an ultra-competitive Division Three (East), while the seconds ended up third in Division Six East.

The awards were as follows, which Burnard explains:

First team

Batsman: Ben Lane — The hard-hitting middle-order player had a personal best season with the bat, averaging over 40 with four half centuries and match-winning performances to go with it.

Bowler: James Ellis — The right-arm swing bowler took wickets 17 times out of the 20 he bowled over the season to end with 30 wickets. A great haul for our ‘Mr Consistency’ with the ball.

Fielder: Ben Jarram — Always full of energy and always a reliable player in the field.

Player: Jason Seldon/Ryan Pooley — Their figures made it impossible to split them. Both superb throughout, with Ryan scoring 499 runs (including two 94s) and taking 32 wickets (including a six-wicket haul), while Jason scored 428 runs (including a personal best of 117) and took 37 wickets (including a six and seven-wicket haul).

Second team

Batsman: Richard Pethick — Reliable through the entire season and cemented the batting line-up throughout from the top of the order, scoring 506 runs with three 50s.

Bowler/Fielder: Ollie Beaumont — A swing bowler who took many vital wickets throughout the year and finished with 15 wickets. His impresssive debut season with the club ended with a call up for the first team to cap it off. He’s also got the most reliable pair of hands in the side and very rarely, if ever, lets the ball past him.

Player — Martin Seldon — After some time away managed to great straight back in the run-scoring groove, scoring 87 in his first game back followed by his first 100 later in the year (136*), ending the season with an average of over 77. Martin is also a reliable man in the field/behind the stumps when called upon.

Club skipper, Jordan Burnard said: “The club as a whole managed to have a very successful season both on and off the field, as I think everyone really enjoyed their cricket this year and that showed with the results that both teams managed to achieve on the pitch.

“As a result, we had over 60 people attend the dinner which was a great laugh and went on well into the early hours of the next morning.

“I’d like to say a big thanks to everyone who helped to organise the event.”

Burnard was quick to praise each team and expects both sides to be in the promotion mix in 2020.

He said: “A massive surge in the second half of the season took us [first team] to within touching distance of third at one point with only a couple games to go, which is a big achievement considering the players we had lost from the season before.

“In fact, we’ve signed more players for next season and hope to see old faces returning to help us push on.

“The seconds, under the captaincy of David Lane (and occasionally Aaron Washer), managed to finish in an impressive third place, and so only narrowly missed out on promotion to Division Five East for next season. However I’m sure they’ll come back even stronger next year!”
