Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League preview — Saturday, August 10
CHAMPIONS Werrington welcome Penzance on Saturday (1pm) knowing that anything other than a win will all but confirm the West Cornwall club’s first ever ECB Cornwall Premier League title.
The Ladycross outfit are currently 27 points behind in second with five games left.
When the two sides met in June, Penzance won by 90 runs.
Callington face a crucial game at third bottom Grampound Road as they scrap with Falmouth to avoid the one relegation spot.
Cally are 13 points clear, but have to go to Trescobeas on the final day.
In County Division One, Werrington seconds will hope for a favour from near neighbours Launceston who welcome freefalling Ludgvan to Lawhitton.
Ludgvan’s one point from their eight-wicket humbling at home to Beacon means that Werrington are now 17 points behind third bottom Ludgvan in the battle to stay up.
Launceston, who have been in good form of late to move away from trouble, lost by four wickets at Redruth seconds last time out.
Werrington have a tough trip to title-chasing Beacon, but at least go in a confident mood after last weekend’s 32-run victory at home to Gorran.
In Division Two East, second bottom St Minver need to keep winning to get out of trouble. They host Grampound Road seconds who have a 16-point buffer.
Luckett are 22 points clear of the bottom two but are likely to need to win a couple more to survive. They head to third-placed Tideford.
Bude have no such worries in fifth and entertain mid-table Roche at Crooklets.
The bottom two meet in Division Three East as second from last Launceston seconds go to their Roche counterparts in a must-win clash for both clubs.
Bude seconds, who beat Roche last weekend to move out of the drop zone, have a tough trip to St Blazey while leaders Holsworthy have a tricky clash at in-form Newquay seconds.
Elsewhere, resurgent Tintagel go to Boconnoc and there’s a derby between two mid-tables clubs in Callington seconds and South Petherwin.
With just three games left to go, promotion from Division Four East is in the hands of Werrington thirds. However with up to four teams in the race, they must win at Buckland Monachorum.
At the other end, Luckett seconds host Grampound Road thirds and relegation certainties Delabole make the short trip to Lanhydrock twos.
Milton Abbot’s home date with Wadebridge thirds has been rearranged meaning South Petherwin seconds are the only club from the Post area to play in Division Five East.
They entertain leaders Menheniot-Looe seconds at Kennards House.
In the basement division, title favourites St Minver seconds — 25 points clear of second-placed Liskeard — have a potentially difficult trip to Gunnislake. They will hope that Launceston thirds can do them a favour when they host Liskeard.
Elsewhere, Tintagel seconds host their Boconnoc counterparts and Werrington fourths welcome Menheniot-Looe thirds.
