LWC Drinks Cornwall Cricket League round-up — Saturday, August 18

WERRINGTON are the new leaders of the ECB Cornwall Premier League ahead of this weekend’s crucial Bank Holiday double-header after a 79-run victory over Callington at Ladycross on Saturday.

In an excellent team performance, Paul Smith’s men totalled 275-8 off their 50 overs with Matthew Robins top-scoring with 45 against his old club.

He was supported by contributions throughout, with Smith making 43, Mark Gribble 35 and Ben Smeeth 21, although they were glad of Australian Jono Baldock’s unbeaten 36 at the end.

For the visitors, leg-spinner Harry Sawyers was the pick of the bowlers with three for 30 off his ten overs.

Callington have won just twice all season and it would have taken a remarkable effort to get close.

Their cause wasn’t helped when skipper Aidan Libby (4) was dismissed by Tom Dinnis (2-19) just four balls into the chase.

Although they slipped to 111-5 with Joe White (30), South African Rashard Fuller (22) and Peter Tancock (22) in the runs, Oliver Allsop (53) and Nick Parker (29no) put on 67 for the sixth wicket before Robins ran out Allsop.

Callington then lost their remaining wickets for just 18 runs with Adam Hodgson (3-36) doing the late damage.

Truro’s win over Falmouth at Boscawen Park means they are 11 points behind Werrington in second with former leaders Penzance, who had their bye week, a point back.

Werrington travel to St Austell, who still have a slim chance of taking the title, on Saturday before the crunch clash with Truro at Ladycross on Bank Holiday Monday (1pm).

Truro are in North Cornwall on Saturday when they face Callington while Penzance go to neighbours St Just. Penzance welcome St Austell two days later.

Launceston’s chances of survival in County Division One were given a massive boost as they beat fellow relegation worriers Roche by 63 runs at Trezaise Road.

After choosing to bat, Launceston were all out for 261 with opener Gavin Wallis top scoring with 80.

Sam Pengelly and skipper Kevin Worth weighed in with 42 apiece although they’ll be left disappointed with a late collapse which gifted the home side a couple of extra bowling points.

Opening bowlers Pengelly and Robert Mutch (1-15 off ten) are arguably the best pairing in the league, and they showed why as they reduced the home side to 0-3 and 36-5 with Pengelly (4-22) in particularly fine form.

However, as is often the case, they let the hosts off the hook to make 198 all out with Neil Trudgeon making a stubborn 58.

Werrington seconds made it nine wins from 15 completed matches as they thrashed basement club St Erme by 185 runs at Castle Field.

Nicholas Adams (37) and Ian Searle (25) put on 89 before both men fell on the same score.

Ben Jenkin then made 78 with Danny Warne (27) and Dan Barnard (31no) adding some quick runs to rack up an imposing 303-7.

Teenagers Callum Edgcombe (29) and Josh Moses (19) added 45 for the first wicket before Edgcombe was dismissed by spinner Darren Johns (4-25).

That triggered a remarkable collapse as the last ten wickets fell for just 63 runs, although Chris Humphries didn’t bat. Warne completed a fine game by taking three for 11 off his five overs.

In Division Two East, third-placed Luckett were easily beaten at league leaders St Austell seconds by eight wickets.

The Chapel Field outfit were all out for 110 with only Jonathan Hoskin (22), Luke Brenton (20) and Jack Sleep (20) passing 20.

The home side eased to victory with Matthew Shapland (2-25) the only wicket taker.

Bude now have a 21-point cushion over Luckett in second after hammering Menheniot-Looe by nine wickets.

Opening bowlers Shaun Whitefield (5-36) and Mark Peck (4-44) were in unstoppable form to bundle the home side out for just 85.

Despite losing Thomas Hall (4) early on, Matthew Williams (37no) and Mark McManus (22no) knocked off the runs without too much fuss.

Callington seconds remain second bottom after losing a thriller to Ladock by just three runs at Moores Park.

Martin Hunn took career best figures of eight for 27 as Ladock were all out for 175.

However, his exploits went unrewarded despite the best efforts of Adam Snowdown (43), Toby Beresford-Power (32) and Tom Neville (31).

St Minver suffered their third consecutive league defeat as basement club Boconnoc eased to an eight-wicket victory at Deer Park.

St Minver could only score 149-8 off their 45 overs with Ross Keast making an invaluable 38 not out at the end after opener Rob Hawken had earlier made the same score.

Keast did take two for 34, but that was as good as it got for the North Cornwall club.

In Division Three East, third-placed South Petherwin were smashed by Saltash Town for the second time this season.

Earlier in the year Petherwin were bowled out for just 29 by the league leaders, and wouldn’t have fancied their chances as they were missing key men Paul Clements and Adrian Warne, who had travelled up to Yorkshire to play for Cornwall Over 50s in the National Cup quarter-final.

They were rolled over for just 75 with the home side knocking it off in less than ten overs for the loss of two wickets.

Tintagel’s recent improvement continued as they eased to a seven-wicket success at relegation-threatened Duloe.

The home side were all out for 177 with Ryan Pooley, Jason Seldon, Aaron Washer and Matthew Pethick taking two wickets apiece.

In a good all-round performance, all five of Tintagel’s batsman passed 20 with Simon Harrison (52) making a half-century.

One of the performances of the season took place at Stanhope Park on Saturday as Holsworthy chased down Roche seconds’ score of 145 in less than 18 overs.

After Sam Stacey (4-37) and Matthew Shepherd (4-47) had shared eight wickets, stand-in opener Shepherd blasted 103 in an innings that included eight fours and nine sixes. His highest score of the season so far had been just ten.

Launceston seconds now know that if they win their final four games they’ll be crowned Division Four East champions after they cruised to a nine-wicket victory over Newquay thirds at Lawhitton.

Despite getting off to a poor start, change bowlers David Cox (3-30) and Ethan Green (4-11 off ten) combined to great effect to leave Newquay reeling.

Although Matthew Millward made an excellent 61, the total of 142 never looked likely as Darren Jenkin smashed a brutal, unbeaten 104 to see them to victory in just 21.2 overs.

They’re five points behind new leaders Bugle after the Clay Country club won by 117 runs at Luckett seconds.

Nathan Toms made 92 for the visitors in their 237 all out with Steve Brown (3-27), Daniel Broome (3-44) and Martin Budge (3-46) sharing nine wickets.

Only Budge (20) and Patrick Thompson (31) made any impression in Luckett’s reply of just 120.

Long time leaders Bude seconds are down to second in the table after losing by seven wickets at home to their Lanhydrock counterparts at Crooklets.

Skipper Gordon Wint led the way with 76 in Bude’s 174-9 although that proved far too little as Jamie Taylor crashed an unbeaten 103 in reply.

Bottom club Milton Abbot picked up their fourth win of the season as they dismantled nine-man St Erme seconds at Baxter Park.

The visitors were all out for just 85 with Nick Ireland taking four wickets.

Milton Abbot were then led home by Paul Crocker (20no) and Tom Rickard’s unbeaten 50.

Delabole won the local bragging rights at Pencarrow although they made hard work of it.

Henning Kaaber took five for 19 as Pencarrow were dismissed for just 133 before Drew Burnard (24), Adrian Pooley (20) and Glen Burrell (20) all made twenties to seal a three-wicket success.

With the exception of Werrington fourths, it was a bad day for the Post area clubs in Division Five East.

While Werrington were thrashing St Stephen by 110 runs at Ladycross, Launceston thirds lost by five wickets at leaders Buckland Monachorum, Tintagel seconds fell to a 145-run defeat at home to their St Blazey counterparts and Gunnislake failed to defend 178 at Tideford seconds.

In Division Six East, South Petherwin seconds kept up their promotion push with 65-run victory over Boconnoc twos after posting 202-6.
