WERRINGTON?Cricket Club held their annual presentation night at Trethorne on Friday, September 21.

Over 100 players and supporters assembled for a meal before Nick Ward, senior captain and the chairman Richard Jenkin all made speeches reflecting on a remarkable summer at Ladycross.

The first team overcame a tough start to reclaim the ECB?Cornwall Premier League title by a point from Penzance in one of the most thrilling title races in recent years.

After four games they had dropped 44 points after a cancellation at Falmouth and defeats at Penzance and Redruth.

They were 28 points behind at the halfway stage but went on a remarkable late run to win 14 of their final 16 games and secure their fourth title in seven years.

They also won the Clive Rosevear Insurance Hawkey Cup by defeating St Austell on their opponents home ground to ensure they won the double in Paul Smith’s first full season in charge.

The second team, after only avoiding relegation the year before due to St?Minver and Ludgvan being kicked out of the division — excelled to come fifth in County Division One.

The thirds finished third bottom in Division Three East and face the prospect of relegation while the fourths — despite finishing sixth in Division Five East — were defeated by South Petherwin seconds in the Division Five promtion play-off meaning as it stands they could be demoted.

Chairman Richard Jenkin said:?“It was a brilliant evening to celebrate a great season.

“It was a great year for us with all four teams doing well; culminating with the first team winning the ECB Cornwall Premier League title against all the odds.

“The seconds also excelled in County One, finishing in the top half of the league for the first time.

“After we’d eaten we started with the youth with Nick Ward going through the teams.

“Nick Wills talked through the fourths who are bringing on the youth who are the future of the club.

“Richard Stanbury then spoke about the thirds. They have an excellent team spirit, enjoy their cricket and have a great time afterwards.

“The seconds really excelled under Mark Hodgson. The spirit was much better than in recent years and for them to finish in the top half of the table was an unbelievable achievement.

“The final speech from the captains was from Paul Smith. He’s been an absolute star. He’s come into the position and grabbed it with both hands and everybody is so pleased for him. He started at Werrington at the age of ten and came through the ranks.”

Once Smith had spoken, the club trophies were awarded which saw Nick Ward, Tom Lyle, Smith and?Adam Jenkin share the Dot Cole Cup for the most catches, Tony Scown win the Percy Bowles Cup for the best bowling figures after taking 7-21 at Duloe, while the Len Hamlyn Cup for the best young bowling went to fourth team spinner Tom Gribble.

The coveted Horwell Supporters’ Player Cup went to first team strike bowler Tom Dinnis while John Moon won the Most Promising youngster under the age of 18.

Once the trophies had been presented, the evening was finished off by some dancing to the ‘Dan Warring Musical Experience’.

The club’s annual general meeting will be held on Monday, November 5 and Jenkin believes it is critical.

He said:?“There are going to be some changes to personnel and we would appreciate the attendance of the players to vote on some very important issues.”
