WERRINGTON made it consecutive victories in the Cornwall Women’s Hardball League on Sunday, June 29 with a 20-run victory over neighbours South Petherwin at Ladycross.
The visitors arrived having seen off Grampound Road in their previous fixture a week earlier, while Werrington had beaten Wadebridge on the same day.
South Petherwin chose to field upon winning the toss but found the going tough as openers Emma Horrell and Molly Curtis put on 66 before the latter was lbw to Alice Mitchell for 19.
Horrell made 43 before being bowled by Meg Masters (2-41 off 6) who soon took out Alice Westlake (101-3).
Runs then came with ease via skipper Grace Kirby (50 retired off 39 balls) and Zoe Jenkin (28 off 33).
Kirby retired and Jenkin was bowled by Mitchell (3-18 off 6) as she and Emma Barnes (2-30 off 6) got some late reward as Werrington closed their 30 overs on 205-7. Fifty-three extras helped the home side’s cause.
South Petherwin were well-placed at 82-0 in the 15th over with Mitchell making 46 from just 51 balls.
But when she was caught by Jenkin off Horrell, the hosts fought back with Horrell bowling Alice Kodritsch with her next delivery.
Werrington then applied the pressure through Jenkin and Freya Bailey, with Abbie Davey the next to go for a single.
The visitors required 105 from their final 60 balls but despite putting up a decent effort, ended 20 short.
Surviving opener Barnes batted through for her 49 from 82 balls, but it was Olivia Jones that gave the innings some impetus with 10 fours in her 49 from just 39 deliveries.
Both fell in the final over to Horrell who had the superb figures of 4-7 from her five overs, while Bailey was also miserly, going at just two the over from her five.
Both sides are due to be in action this Sunday as Werrington go to Perranporth and Petherwin make the even longer trip down to Helston.
