LWC?Drinks Cornwall Cricket League Division Five East promotion play-off at South Petherwin CC

South Petherwin seconds 257-2 (40 overs)

Werrington fourths 183-6 (40 overs)

ROGER?Gerry hit a chanceless 105 as South Petherwin seconds beat Werrington fourths by 74 runs in the Division Five promotion play-off on Saturday.

Petherwin finished second in Division Six East while Werrington will feel aggrieved at having to go down despite finishing sixth out of ten teams in the league above.

After winning the toss, Werrington chose to field but were left regretting that decision as Petherwin racked up a massive 257-2 from their 40 overs.

Roger Gerry and Nick Gerry made a solid start as they reached 77-0 at the halfway stage before proceeding to accelerate as they went at nine-an-over for the remaining 20 overs.

They added a further 100 after drinks before the economical Brian Baker (1-28) bowled Gerry for 62.

The hard-hitting Michael Clements came in added further quick runs before Gerry eventually departed for 105 with a handful of overs remaining.

102 runs were added in the final ten overs as Gareth?Clements joined him.

They ended on 33 not out and 27 not out respectively with both men smashing three fours and two sixes.

Werrington needed more than a run-a-ball from the start; a task made even more difficult by Michael Searle who did a similar job to Baker.

Former first team captain Nigel?Dennis is always the wicket to get and although Werrington reached 67-1 at the halfway stage they needed over 9.5 an over from there on in.

When Dennis departed for 58, their chances looked slim.

Youngster Toby Ward battled away for 54 while Martin Wills chipped in with 24. However the run-rate continued to soar and they ended up 74 runs short.

Man-of-the-match Roger Gerry, who is also the club secretary, said: “It’s been a great season for us on the field. The firsts finished third which was better than anticipated and it’s the same with the seconds.”
