BUDE Cricket Club’s newly-formed women’s team enjoyed their first 20/20 soft ball game against a strong Werrington team at Crooklets on Wednesday, August 6.

On a beautiful summer’s evening, a healthy crowd, who were also treated to a BBQ, gathered and saw a competitive fixture.

Werrington won the toss and decided to bat first with a mix of experience and a few players from Bude to make up the numbers.

The Seasiders started well, restricting the opening pair to mainly singles before Werrington’s Under 15s Cornwall player Grace came and showed some good power-hitting.

The bowlers continued to plug away and a late flurry of wickets meant Werrington were restricted to just over 300 with the standout bowlers being Chloe and Izzy.

The inexperienced Bude team came into bat.

Werrington started well, taking a wicket in the first over, but the opening pair of Lesa and Sabrina put into practice their first few coaching sessions and steadied the ship before a good bowling display by Werrington pegged them back.

Werrington continued to take wickets at regular intervals but some good lower-order hitting by Lauren, Gina and Andrea took the total to within 30.

Coach Mark Whitefield was extremely pleased with his team’s effort, commenting how in only three training sessions, the ladies had shown great skill level and a keen understanding of the game.

The evening’s cricket was seen as a success with Bude aiming to join the Cornwall Women’s Softball League next year.
