North Cornwall Table Tennis League 2019/20 (week four) round-up

LAST year’s Division One runners-up North Hill A moved to within three points of leaders Torridge with a game in-hand after a 9-1 victory over Budehaven C on Thursday night.

With Shirley Luckhurst absent, North Hill called upon Plymouth League player Michael Briggs and he delivered three wins from three, all without dropping a set.

Iain Oxenhame and Martin Hynes were pushed much harder with Hynes being beaten in straight games by Sam Jennings while Oxenhame was forced to recover from 2-0 to defeat Tim Orchard.

Helland were comprehensively beaten 7-3 at home to Torridge.

As ever, David Streak and Steve Cragg were in superb form for Torridge, both recording three victories in the singles as well as combining in the doubles.

The home trio of Ingus Abolnieks, Mike Fisher and Ritchie Bartlett each defeated skipper David Stone although Abolnieks won the match of the season so far in the division 13-11 in the fifth. Four of the five ends went to sudden death.

The match between Budehaven B and Whitstone Wanderers was postponed, as was Budehaven A’s Knockout Cup match at Crackington A.

Three matches went ahead in Division Two with Crackington B and Altarnun A maintaining their unbeaten records.

Keiron Chatterjea kept up his 100% record as Crackington defeated Bridgerule A 8-2.

He beat the previously unbeaten Alan Quilter in the first match of the night, before Quilter responded by getting the better of Judith Cook and Zach Parker.

Cook and Parker had no trouble in winning their other two against Jay Brewer and Shaun Collins.

Altarnun moved to within two points with a 6-4 victory over Crackington C, despite Simon Holmes not registering a point. He was however unfortunate to lose in five games twice.

Altarnun’s six points came through Paul Burden’s treble, Geoff Hale’s brace and in the doubles with Simon Patterson (2), James Ellis and Trevor Dean each recording a victory.

Budehaven E got their first victory of the season with a 9-1 victory over North Hill C.

The trio of Roy Stubbs, Ian Westaway and Ian Edwards were each unbeaten in the singles although Helen Aplin and Jill Diggory did superbly to recover from 2-0 to defeat Stubbs and Edwards in the doubles.

The match between Launceston and North Hill B was rearranged.

Last year’s runners-up Altarnun B got their Division Three campaign underway with a 5-0 victory over Bridgerule C.

William Salt and Malcolm Tulip each won their singles before Mike Tremeer and Dave Jones added the doubles point.

The battle of the Budehaven teams went the way of the G team as they beat Budehaven H 4-1.

Three of the four were making their league debut — while the other, David Scott, was playing just his second league match.

Scott beat both Alex Worth and Finlay McKinnon, with McKinnon getting the better of Robert Clarke-Feltham.

Clarke-Feltham did manage to record his first victory, which came in a close tussle with Worth.
