CLIVE ROSEVEAR HAWKEY CUP FINAL
NEWQUAY v CALLINGTON at ST AUSTELL
Callington lifted the Hawkey Cup on Wednesday evening for the first time in 12 years, by beating Newquay by seven runs in a gripping match.
Newquay won the toss and elected to bowl first in sunny conditions. The Callington openers put 24 runs on the board before James Long was bowled by Richard Spall for 12. Spall then turned catcher off Neil Furlonger to dismiss Joe White for five, and Tom Hughes edged a four, causing fielder Godfery Furse to collide with the sight screen necessitating hospital treatment for the Cornwall county manager.
Hughes snicked the next ball to keeper Adam Cocking off Spall, to reduce Callington to 31-3 off five overs.
However, Murray Workman was still there and he made an invaluable 37 to take the score on to 83, before he was caught by Harrison Webb off Tom Eggins for 37.
After that the Callington innings was held together by skipper Aidan Libby, who hit six fours in a fine knock of 46 not out as Newquay were set a tricky target of 132 to win. Spall was the best bowler, taking 2-23 from his four overs.
The Newquay reply started disastrously, with professional Godfrey Stevens being caught at square by long off Workman for just one run, and Tom Eggins was caught at long on by Rob Dymond again off Workman for two. Dymond was also on hand to catch Webb off Alex Robinson for 13, and Newquay were reeling on 26-3 off eight overs.
Ash Bicknell was trapped leg before by Libby, but then an unbeaten stand between Cocking and Spall threatened to win the game for the seasiders. Despite struggling with the required run rate, Cocking put together a fine innings of 53, supported by Spall with 36, but it all came down to 17 being required from the last over, to be bowled by the experienced Jim Shorten.
That proved to be a step too far as Shorten kept his nerve and Callington ran out winners by seven runs and man of the match was Murray Workman.
Callington 131-7 (A Libby 46no, M Workman 37; R Spall 2-23), Newquay 124-4 (A Cocking 53no, R Spall 36no; M Workman 2-15). Callington win by 7 runs.
