North Devon Table Tennis League 2019/20 (week seven) round-up

BRIDGERULE bounced back from their first defeat of the season at Smugglers by beating fellow Division One title hopefuls Blazing Paddles 7-3 on Friday night.

The highlight from a home perspective was David Streak defeating the previously unbeaten Kevin Taylor in straight ends.

Although Taylor eased past Steve Cragg and Helen Murgatroyd and won the doubles with Tim Cooke, Streak won all three with Cragg and Murgatroyd both beating Cooke and Steve Richardson.

Holsworthy A made it three wins on the spin in Division One of the North Devon Table Tennis League last Tuesday night after a 7-3 success over Herons at Sutcombe Village Hall.

Mark Beaumont and skipper Dave Salisbury were both in superb form, seeing off Robin Gale, Bill Tregellas and Rob Herman in straight ends.

They also combined to win the doubles in four ends.

However it was a different story for Owen Salisbury who was left frustrated after losing all three, the second of which saw him let slip a two-set lead against Gale to lose 12-10 in the decider.

Holsworthy D’s poor form continues as they fell to a second successive whitewash, this time at Monkleigh Village Hall against Spin Doctors.

David Sillifant was edged out in a thrilling five-set contest against David Ewen but apart from that, the hosts had it pretty much all their own way.

Holsworthy B and C were both in action at Sutcombe in Division Two, although there were very contrasting fortunes.

In the top of the table clash between Holsworthy B and leaders Littleham, neither could be separated as they fought out a 5-5 draw.

David Stone was unbeaten all night for the visitors while Matthew Sussex, filling in for the absent Alan Pomeroy, picked up a brace, both of which came in deciders.

However, with Barry Stearman, Jill Knightley and Doug Genini all beating Mike Bellew and Stearman edging past Sussex in a thriller, it was then down to Knightley and Genini to win the doubles in straight sets to earn the draw.

Holsworthy C were whitewashed 10-0 by Chulmleigh Chiefs.

Although Sumiyo Berkeley pushed Andrew Saliauskas to the limit, the Chulmleigh man scraped home 11-9 in the fifth.
