MIXED SECTION
STRATTON got off to a reasonable start in the Mixed Millenium Trophy on Friday, May 9, establishing a 12-shot lead after five ends with all three rinks leading.
But Callington fought back slowly making the most of home advantage on a tricky green. After 16 ends disaster struck, with Aron Braund unluckily catching Stratton’s own bowl wrong, turning the head from one up to four down.
At the same time, Steve Jones’ rink and Gerald Maynard’s rink both dropped a one, turning an overall three-shot lead for Stratton into a three-shot deficit.
It was looking like it wasn’t meant be as the ascendancy was with the home team and it was not really a surface you could chase shots with any confidence.
Aron and Steve’s rink finished their last ends, with Aron picking up one and Steve dropping one, giving Callington a slender two-shot overall lead whilst Gerald was playing their 17th end and holding one at the head.
With his last bowl Gerald lived up to his nickname of ‘Magic’, producing a wonder bowl any bowler would be proud of.
Playing with a yard of pace, Gerald found a perfect line that saw his bowl miss the short bowls in the head to bend perfectly to Callington’s second shot, turning it away for a much-needed count of five shots.
Playing the last end, with a nervy three-shot overall lead, Stratton miscast the Jack allowing Callington to put it up to a full length.
Dave Clark playing at three in the rink, made his way down to the mat and with his first bowl played with weight to miss the oppositions shot bowl, which was only a few inches off the jack.
With his second bowl he adjusted perfectly, producing a ‘Clarky Special’ to draw within a couple inches and gain the shot, putting the pressure on the opposing skip.
Thankfully, they held onto the one shot to ensure an overall win by four shots.
