BOSCASTLE Short Mat Bowls Club has won this year’s Northern Area Bowls Championship, run by the Cornwall County Short Mat Bowling Association.

Having only been promoted the season before, the club exceeded their wildest expectations as they won 11 and lost just four of their 16 games, including going the whole season unbeaten on their home mat.

Club captain, Mike Lawrence, said: “I am delighted that we have won the championship. We had set our sights on consolidating after our promotion to the Premier League, but our teams have been outstanding in their matchplay and this has been a deserved, if hard-fought, outcome to the season. Well done to everybody and we can’t wait to defend our crown next year.”

While Boscastle have enjoyed plenty of success collectively, the same can be said in the individual competitions as David Topliffe won the prestigious Cornwall Northern Area Singles Championship.

Boscastle Short Mat Bowls Club welcomes new members to short mat bowls. No experience or special equipment is needed — the club can provide everything to start you off — and you can have a chat, a cup of tea and at the same time enjoy a sport in the warm and dry.

If you are interested go along to the Boscastle Community and Recreation Centre in Dunn Street on Monday evenings from 7pm or on Fridays at 2pm. There is no age limit –with members ranging from 12 to 90.
