LAUNCESTON have a tae kwon-do world champion after 14-year-old Lowenna Barnes was part of a three-girl team to win gold at the Tae Kwon-Do International World Championships at the Arena Birmingham over the weekend.
Barnes, 14, first of all competed in the sparring for red belt girls (aged 11-14) where she sparred brilliantly, with skill and purpose winning several rounds through to the semi -final where she lost a hard-fought fight against to a Polish opponent, who went on the win the title.
Barnes eventually collected the bronze, which was Launceston’s first ever world championship medal.
There was even better news later in the day as Barnes entered the team tag event for red belt girls (again aged 11-14) under the wing of multiple world champion, Warren Vice.
In the competition, her two team-mates sparred unbelievably against more experienced challengers right through to the final where they took on Scottish opponents. In a close fought match, Lowenna and her compatriots came through to become world champions.
Club instructor, Paul Bunn, said: “Many congratulations to Lowenna on becoming a world champion, hours of dedication and rewarding work lead to the momentous achievement.”
As well as Barnes, six other competitors — Nadine Wright, Jamie Hunt, James Naylor, Victoria Naylor, Donna Wadham and John Titley — all competed fiercely and represented Launceston Tae Kwon-Do superbly against strong and determined opponents from all over the world in various categories.
Paul added: “Many congratulations to all who took part in this awesome event, it was incredibly organised and we look forward the next worlds in two years’ time.”
