Upper Tamar Lake Sailing Club race report June 19, 2016
Cup Two (Handicap Race)
MOST people seemed to be having a Fathers’ Day Sunday lunch or the weather forecast put people off as only six keen helms took to the water at midday. The rain had already set in by the time the first race started at 12.00 and proceeded to get heavier as the day continued.
The winds were deceptive from the race hut, with the stronger gusts being felt once away from the lee of the shore.
Two Lasers, two Toppers and two Bosuns’ started the first race and all made a good start with Steve Axford in a laser taking an early lead followed by Bob Sampson’s Laser, both Jane Anderson’s and Nathan Pollard’s Topper, and John Buckett and Elliott Pomeroy who both sailed in a Bosun.
The positions didn’t change much through out the race but the two crew in with John Buckett would likely have slowed him down.
Final Results following adjustments: 1. J Anderson (Topper); 2. S Axford (Laser); 3. R Sampson (Laser); 4. N Pollard (Topper); 5. E Pomeroy with Rachel crewing (Bosun); 6. J Buckett with Cilia and Brian crewing (Bosun)
Commodore Cup 6 (Handicap)
The afternoon race started at 14.01 with the Bosuns deciding that they’d rather get dry.
With the weather closing in and visibility diminishing, the two Lasers and two Toppers took to the water again, with a course change and a gusty wind increasing the second race threw up some challenges.
Steve Axford once a again took the lead from the start and held it to the finish. Bob Sampson’s Laser capsized in the first race and struggled to catch Steve while the two Toppers had a good race together with the lead changing from Nathan to Jane Anderson.
The safety boat was deployed on the water to keep the boats insight as they headed for pinkie.
Final Results following adjustments: 1. S Axford (Laser); 2. J Anderson (Topper); 3. N Pollard (Topper); 4. R Sampson (Laser)
