THIS National Two return game at Polson had all the proverbial hallmarks of the local derby — disjointed, hectic, at times ill-disciplined and low scoring.
This is not the way Redruth will see it. They have now done the double over their East Cornwall rivals, and whether you play in the cauldrons of Polson or the Recreation Ground, you feel elated to come out with a win, however ground out.
On balance, the Reds deserved their win, dominating the first half with the All Blacks making only infrequent raids in opposition territory. In addition, the only try came from the visitors and even that did not involve anyone actually crossing the line — it was a penalty try in the 32nd minute.
The All Blacks down 10-3 at the break had lost the first half penalty count 9-5, and had lock Ben Hilton and prop Neil Bayliss sent off within five minutes of each other towards the end of the first quarter.
As skipper flanker Tom Rawlings said afterwards: "When you are down to 13 men you cannot really do an awful lot. There was quite a bit of indiscipline, but I was pleased that we upped our game and went up a notch from the last time we played them."
