NORTH Cornwall’s up and coming athletes could benefit from a new programme hoping to nurture sporting excellence.
Launceston College is now accepting 2026 applications for their ‘Elite Sports Academies’, designed to support and develop student athletes across a range of sports. With a focus on excellence, the academies aim to provide top-tier coaching, exclusive training sessions, and opportunities for young athletes to reach their full potential.
Partnering with the Cornish Pirates rugby team and Plymouth Argyle Football Club coaches, the Elite Sports Academies offer top-tier guidance including expert training, core PE lessons, competitions, and special trips to professional matches, residential camps, and elite facilities.
Applications are now open for girls rugby, boys rugby, girls football, boys football, boys and girls cricket, and the individual athlete academy. The individual athlete academy supports sports like athletics, tennis, and swimming with weekly strength and conditioning training, travel subsidies, and extra support.
The Elite Sports Academies entry criteria stipulates that students must already play at club level in their respective sports. This ensures that each student is not only passionate about their sport but is also capable of competing at a high level.
Launceston College is also now providing free school transport for students who live in the Bude and the surrounding area, making it easier than ever to access their Elite Sport Academies and exceptional educational offer. The college will also continue to offer free transport to those who live in the areas surrounding Holsworthy.
Mr Matthew Thompson, principal at Launceston College, said: "We are thrilled to open applications for our Elite Sports Academies for 2026. These programmes are designed to give talented young athletes access to expert coaching, specialised training, and exciting opportunities to develop their skills both on and off the field.”
