THE group behind transforming a site in Launceston — previously likened to a ‘post-war bomb site’ — to a children’s play area looks forward to starting work as soon as possible.
The Lanstephan Area Play Park group, which first discussed its plans to transform a site off St Mary’s Road into a play area for local children two and half years ago, hopes the transfer of land from Cornwall Council to Launceston Town Council is imminent, so that the group can get to work.
The group said once the transfer has taken place, fencing can be replaced, tree and shrub planters can be installed, as well as seats and a nest swing.
Once that has been completed, the group will look to see what further equipment may be able to be purchased with the remaining funds and space.
Chairman of the Lanstephan Area Play Park Iris Lindsay said: “We are hoping something’s going to happen pretty soon.
“The children have really enjoyed the open space up there since it has been resurfaced. It’s made a difference to them.
“Since starting this project over two and a half years ago we have come to realise how much more everything is going to cost. The price of equipment is not excessive but the additional costs of safety flooring, installation and safety checks more than doubles the outlay.
“Working on this project has shown that the local residents care about their community and our aim is that on completion of the park this community spirit can continue.”
