VOLUNTEERS from the Bude area are once again celebrating success at the 2016 Cornwall Celebrates Volunteering Awards, held in Newquay recently.

The annual awards, staged by Volunteer Cornwall, are a chance to recognise the achievements of the county’s volunteers with prizes presented by the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, Col Edward Bolitho, and sponsors in front of a VIP audience.

Chief executive of Volunteer Cornwall Ian Jones said: “Now, more than ever, volunteering is seen as the crucial glue that holds our communities together, and this event allows us to showcase the vital work undertaken by Cornwall’s volunteers, charities and community groups.”

Winners included Terence McCulley and Joan Fennell, who both volunteer for the Bude-based ‘Exercising for Mobility’ and other local organisations. Terence won the Community Volunteer award, whilst Joan picked up the award for Volunteer Driver.

The event, now in its eighth year, was held at the Atlantic Hotel in Newquay, recognising the contribution made by volunteers to public life in Cornwall, which has the highest volunteering rates in the country.

All shortlisted volunteers received a commemorative paperweight and the category winners received an engraved presentation bowl. Everyone who was nominated will receive a certificate.
