The work of a women’s centre in Cornwall was given the royal seal of approval after a visit from Her Majesty, The Queen.

During a tour of the centre in Bodmin, Queen Camilla learned about the vital work undertaken by the Women’s Centre Cornwall, a charity that provides specialist support to women and girls living with the impact of abuse.

The royal visit included an introduction to the charity’s services which include one-to-one and peer support, as well as specific services for women facing multiple disadvantages such as homelessness and discrimination. The Queen also met with young women who shared some of the poetry and artwork they have created at the centre and joined the charity’s volunteer support workers in a tree-planting ceremony.

Demand for The Women Centre Cornwall’s specialist sexual and domestic abuse support has more than doubled in the last three years and with an increase of 30% in the last year alone. Women and girls throughout Cornwall can access its support at no cost to them and benefit from a unique ‘women supporting women’ approach. The charity recognises that women and girls are the experts in their own lives and experiences and stands alongside them in a safe space as they restore their personal power.

The visit coincides with The Women Centre Cornwall’s Walk My Walk campaign, launched in partnership with Safer Cornwall. As part of the national initiative to end violence against women and girls, women are invited to anonymously share what they have experienced on the streets of Cornwall in a survey and have their voices heard.

Participants can respond to the survey via a link on the charity’s newly relaunched website which showcases the important work The Women’s Centre Cornwall does through their various projects and services.

The results will be included in national data that will inform the Home Office about the reality of women’s experiences.
