CENTENARY celebrations of the Women's Institute continued at the Royal Cornwall Show.

Members from across the county embraced this year's theme 'Let's Celebrate' which marked 100 years of the organisation.

Victoria sponges, jars of jam, posies, knitted items and congratulations cards perfectly placed in gift boxes showcased members' skills and WI heritage.

This year's WI county chairman, Barbara Corbett said the standard of entries was 'fantastic'.

With some 37 entries, St Breward secured fifth place, Altarnun, 12th, Launceston, 17th, St Teath, 24th. Not to be forgotten were Trevena/Tintagel and Jacobstow WIs with their displays.

The Barbara Reed trophy for a sampler of any medium was won by Alison Gribble from Coads Green WI; 2, Sue Draper, Pensilva; 3, Vicki Knights, Launceston.

The judge decided not to award the Wadebridge and Penponds trophies, however, Jane Churchill Brown from Launceston was awarded second place for her floral exhibit depicting 'Green and Pleasant Land'.

Providing 'assistance' throughout the day and noted for their uncanny 'human resemblance' were two scarecrows based on the book and TV series, Home Fires. Frances Culver from St Breward enjoyed show success, not only receiving praise for her scarecrow, but best in show for floral art sub committee clubs and the Smale Cup for her 'Burning Gold' exhibit. Margaret Bedwell from Launceston followed closely in second, meanwhile the Rosemary Slee award for best cookery item was awarded to St Teath.
