IMPROVED internet coverage is set to come to Holsworthy as plans to install free WiFi in the square are completed.

The project started in January with the hopes of getting free network coverage for all residents and visitors to the town — there are plans to extend the network to Fore Street but this is not yet certain.

The work was carried out by a number of locals working together with the town council, which granted permission for the team to use the pump in the square to mount the antenna.

The team included Steven Anderson, Jon Hutchings, Andrew Kemp and Cameron Headon. Each had a different role in the project but worked together to get it completed.

The network was installed to help those in the area, or visitors to Holsworthy, with signal issues and limited data plans on their devices gain access to the web.

The WiFi uses a Superfast broadband connection of 80MB/s, but in order to prevent the network from grinding to a halt while being connected to by multiple devices a firewall has been put in place. The firewall limits the network to 3MB/s per device to prevent users with file sharing software on a system from bringing the network down.

The town square already offers free parking, and now with the bonus of being able to check emails and surf the internet the hope is the network will increase the number of visitors to the centre of Holsworthy.
