At the recent Rotary District 1290 Annual Conference, District Governor Alan Jones, handed out awards from the Shelterbox Organisation to Rotary Clubs as a recognition of all the help they have given in donating money for Shelterboxes. Banners were handed out to clubs that had achieved either 25 or 50 Shelterboxes. Most clubs had achieved 25, a few more reached 50. The only club in the entire district to have bought and paid for Shelterboxes in excess of 75 is the Rotary Club of Launceston. This is a major tribute to the generosity of the people of Launceston and the surrounding area as was recognised by the District Governor himself as he handed over the banners to the current Club President, Paul Smith. Paul said: "The people of Launceston are always magnificent in the way they support the club in its efforts to raise money for this worthy cause. We are often overwhelmed and humbled by the way they dig deep to help those in desperate need wherever it may be. It is a privilege to be part of a community that has done so much." As a result of the continuing support of the public and the generosity of Derek Broad at Homeleigh Garden Centre and Philip Warren for supplying the meat, the club raised enough money at a barbeque over the weekend to enable it to send a further sum for another Shelterbox, to be sent to an area in need — probably Tanzania. The club hopes to be the first in the District to reach 100 boxes!
