THE FORUM SOURCES THE FUNDING: The Launceston stone has been erected near the Pennygillam roundabout, Launceston. The idea came from Kevin Hicks some three years ago to place a stone with WELCOME TO LAUNCESTON on it in a prominent location. Funding was sourced by The Launceston Forum and Kevin found a suitable stone on the farm of Mr Mervin Colwell near St Clether. It was difficult to find a location in the town as all of the roadside verges had services in them, so a site up on the bank near the A30 bridge was chosen. Planning approval was given, which meant it was just a matter of waiting until the ground conditions were suitable. Kevin finished his term as a director of the forum and passed the project on to another director, Adam Paynter. Approval was given from the Highways Agency, which was followed by several phone calls to builders and contractors about the difficulty of moving and erecting a 10 tonne stone. Ray Cooper and Chris Emmett offered to take the job on and the stone was transported to the site on Saturday and fixed in place. SEE Cornish & Devon Post Series for picture and full story.
