TWO Kilkhampton women held a Twilight Walk around Tamar Lakes in memory of their relative Georgie DeRosa, raising vital funds for The Brain Tumour Charity, the UK’s leading charity dedicated to fighting this devastating disease.
Emma DeRosa and Jordan Gist were inspired to take part in the walk on Friday, October 6, after losing Georgie — Emma’s sister, Jordan’s auntie — to a brain tumour in April 2016.
The team walked 3.51 miles around Tamar Lakes.
The pair said: “We were so proud to put on our walking t-shirts for the charity and be part of the team. It’s such an important cause after losing our Georgie and finding that the charity is so underfunded by the Government. We were so pleased with the number of walkers who participated, the weather was fantastic with a beautiful sunset to finish things off, with a wonderful atmosphere when we met back at The New Inn, Kilkhampton, who we would like to thank for the donation of the food they provided.
“The best bit about the walk was seeing everybody come together in memory of Georgie, the only bad bit was the aching muscles afterwards.”
Twenty adults, nine children and three dogs walked the route for The Brain Tumour Charity and current estimates show they’re on target to raise an incredible £1,600 in total.
Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under 40, yet less than 2% of cancer research funding goes on brain tumours in the UK.
The Brain Tumour Charity is the UK’s largest dedicated brain tumour charity, committed to fighting brain tumours on all fronts. It funds pioneering research to increase survival and improve treatment options
as well as raising awareness of the symptoms and effects of brain tumours to bring about earlier diagnosis.
The charity also provides support for everyone affected so that they can live as full a life as possible, with the best quality of life.
Geraldine Pipping, the charity’s head of fundraising, said: “We are grateful for all the efforts made by our incredible fundraisers and thank them for taking part in the Tamar Lakes Twilight Walk — we hope they’re now enjoying a well-earned rest!
“Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of the under 40s and survival rates have not improved significantly over the last 40 years. We are leading the way in changing this by fighting brain tumours on all fronts.
“We receive no government funding and rely 100% on voluntary donations, so it’s only through the efforts of people like Emma and Jordan that we can change these shocking statistics in the future.”
