IN AN attempt to combat speeding Devon and Cornwall Police are looking for volunteers in Holsworthy to join the new Community Speed Watch scheme.
Devon and Cornwall Police have developed a ‘Police Volunteer Programme’ where members of the community can become part of an organisation of volunteers who take on specific roles in conjunction with the Holsworthy Neighbourhood Police Team.
Community Speed Watch teams will be made up of these Police volunteers, who will stand at the roadside, in designated risk assessed sites around Holsworthy and monitor the traffic.
The speed watch is a scheme designed to empower communities so that they are able to assist the Police in their quest to push down the speeds of vehicles in areas where the limit is 30mph.
The aim of the Speed Watch is to engage with and educate drivers rather than the traditional issuing of fines or court appearances. They instead use a ‘staged warning’ system.
The Police volunteers will record the details of speeding vehicles and warning letters will then be sent to the registered owner, along with educational information.
If anyone would like more information or are interested in becoming involved with a Community Speed Watch team as a Police volunteer they can contact Holsworthy Neighbourhood Police Team’s PFCSO Mark James by emailing [email protected] or by calling the 101 non-emergency number.
