AM: Commodore's Cup 5
There was a carnival atmosphere for the dinghy racing at Upper Tamar, with the Lakes Trust's Open Day bringing in a stream of people eager to try their hand at windsurfing, canoeing and sailing on a stunning summer's day.
Amidst the hubbub, 16 sailing club dinghies jockeyed on the line for the start of the midday race; spoiling tactics by some boats on starboard tack caused problems for many of the port tack starters, but it was the latter that were first to the Dam buoy, with Nicky Buckett grabbing the opportunity to lead the way. Ace club sailor Jane Anderson was balked on the line and made an uncharacteristically bad start, but was soon fighting back and when Nicky went the wrong side of Pinky buoy, Jane was quick to pounce on the mistake and take the lead.
Bob Sampson's RS200, with Sue Murray making her debut as crew, also suffered at the start, bumping another boat and having to do the obligatory penalty turns, and as a result they were relegated to the back of the fleet.
Whilst Jane reinforced her lead at the front, behind her places were changing quickly. Derek Farnfield's Streaker was living up to its name and was in second place as the fleet turned at Far buoy, but in carefree holiday mood David Higgs soon eased his Laser past to push Derek back to third at the end of the first lap. Stephanie Clark refused to let lack of sailing practice put her off and was going well in fourth place.
On the second lap, the RS200 began to make its boatspeed pay, with Bob passing much of the fleet to come from miles back all the way through to grab second place. In the latter stages of the race, it was a case of 'to those that hath, shall be given'; as soon as the lead boats had completed an easy reach to round the windward mark at the Dam, the wind shifted so that the rest of the fleet had to tack laboriously to and fro to arrive at the same point.
Nothing could stop Jane Anderson and she crossed the line, not only three minutes ahead of the next boat, but also a very comfortable winner on handicap. Despite dropping back a bit, Derek Farnfield consolidated on his good start to be second on handicap, whilst although the wind wasn't strong enough for ideal Topper conditions, Vicki Duncalf persevered well to notch up third place on handicap.

PM: Cup Race 5
With the sound of the Bude Metric Brass drifting across the water, there was a relaxed feel to the start of the afternoon race. The relaxed mood clearly didn't extend to Jane Anderson, however, who was obviously determined not to repeat her poor start of the morning race and was exactly spot on the line as the horn sounded to get her clear away from the rest of the fleet and round the Dam mark in first place.
Unsuspecting families trying out kayaks and pedalos probably also felt slightly less than relaxed as the circling fleet suddenly turned in their direction and converged on the Dam mark, but despite some jostling, everybody got round and set off up the lake.
Bob Sampson's RS200 emerged out of the ruck to claim second place, with Simon Veal getting into third ahead of David Higgs. Further up the lake, the wind turned into something of a stop-go affair, with the fleet bunching and stretching away as the little zephyrs came and went.
By the start of the second lap, the boats were starting to spread out, however, with the first three pulling away from the rest. Mary Carter was re-finding her sailing form, though, moving up two places, overtaking both the Graduate and Mike Ford's Solo. Meg Higgs also found some speed, suddenly picking up the wind to catch up the other Toppers in the fleet.
On a first outing on the lake in his recently-acquired Solo, Paul Whybrow looked to be in a strong position on handicap, although Nicky Buckett managed to get past on the third lap. Not content with this, she got the inside line on Derek Farnfield's Streaker at the Dam buoy to carry out a classic overtaking manoeuvre in front of the watching audience dotted across the grass.
There were no changes at the front of the fleet, however and Jane Anderson, Bob Sampson and Simon Veal held on to their positions to finish one-two-three on the water. Jane also notched up another comfortable victory on handicap, but Derek Farnfield confirmed his improved performance in the Streaker to come second, with Simon Veal claiming third. Paul Whybrow continued to go well to almost get a podium position, finishing just seconds behind Simon on handicap to gain a creditable fourth place on his boat's first appearance.
