TWELVE disadvantaged young people have reached Level 2 and 3 of the Academy of Surfing Instructors certificate during the eight-week Urban Surf Programme held in Bude this summer. The last session was held on Friday at Crooklets Beach in Bude.

The youngsters come from a range of difficult backgrounds and have never had the opportunity to surf due to cost of equipment and lessons before.

The diversionary programme is run by Community Action Through Sport (CATS) and is aimed to not only give access to new sport, but to introduce confidence, self esteem and achievement through surfing as an alternative to nuisance behaviour.
