A MOTORCYLE enthusiast has been recognised for his involvement with one of the country's most renowned on/off-road challenges. Derek Jones from Sutcombe first became involved with the Motor Cyle Club's London to Land's End Trial when he was just sixteen. He said: "I have always had a passion for motorcycles and my first ride was in 1963 on a 650 Triumph Trophy." Mr Jones would watch the motorcycles tackle hairpin bends at Darracott, near Hartland, where he marshalled for the first time in 1958. From 1964, he continued marshalling duties at Sutcombe Hill, when it first became part of the trial. He said: "I have only ever missed one trial since I started and that was because of a hip operation." For the full report, and a round-up of the local news and sport, see this week's edition of the Post.
