THE 1st Tregadillett Guides were recently awarded a £2,000 grant by the Rotary Club of Launceston’s community shop fund.
The money will be used to buy camping equipment and in assisting with expenses relating to 20 of the Guides attending the week long 2017 Cornwall Guides Jamboree.
Leader, Beth Martin, said: “The camping equipment will be in use for years to come, as we propose to attend a district camp every year. This could be in Cornwall or further afield. We also plan to hold weekend camps throughout the year.”
Rotary community shop manager, Rotarian Dennis Howson, said he is particularly pleased the shop committee was able to make this grant, as the Tregadillet Guides have, for many years, made a valuable contribution in helping run the annual rotary sports day for people from all over Cornwall with learning disabilities.
Dennis said the guides ‘certainly live up to their aim of making a positive contribution to the community and the wider world’, and added that their efforts to raise funds in many other ways is a ‘credit to them’.
The grant presentation was made on World Thinking Day, the birthday of Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Scouts and Guides movements. It is a day to think about the movement in all countries of the world, the meaning of guiding and its global impact. The Tregadillett Guides celebrated with a Thinking Day tea party, a history of guiding game and campfire singing.
