March 26, 1998

Children at North Petherwin School took a trip back into Cornwall’s past this week, when they visited a Celtic round house on Bodmin Moor. Joining the trip were pupils Joanne Hawke, Emma Venning, Luke Sanders, Charlotte Clift, Adam Sanders, Rachel Spittle, Holly Bristow, Felix Sampson, Natalie Stevens, Joy Moffatt, Ellen Prosser, Simon Freeman, Ruth Hewlett, Jack Gubbin, Tom Strawbridge, Ben Hawke, Catherine Murton, Sam Keat, Darren Jenkin, Joe Reeve, Matthew Daniel and Josh Andrews. Thanks were expressed to Mr Tony Blackman for organising an excellent education.

News that staff in North Cornwall’s leisure centres may not receive a pay rise this year because the required rate of return has not been greeted with anger by some achieved has been greeted with anger by some employees of Camelford Leisure Centre who claim that business there is good.

The former School House at Camelford Junior and Infant School, which has been empty for a number of years and become a target for vandals, is set to be declared surplus to the requirements of Cornwall education Committee.

March 26, 1983

Marhamchurch Primary School entered the traditional dance section at the Cornish Eisteddfod at Truro and came fourth out of 15 groups - a creditable result for this new venture. The ream comprised Paul Cooper, Rebecca Rose, John Kershaw, Shirley Wilcox, Paul Puddephatt, Julie Day, Anthony Grills and Miriam Congdon.

The MAYC ‘Miss Personality’ competition was judged at Flexbury Methodist Church on Saturday.

Rev David Wills is to be the new vicar of St Thomas and St Stephen’s, Launceston. He is coming back to Cornwall from Oxfordshire, but was formerly vicar of St Michael’s, Bude Haven.

A formal plan for development of the Launceston district is likely to be scrapped following a decision on Tuesday by North Cornwall Council’s policy committee.

March 24, 1973

People who criticised the efforts of the Royal British Legion came under attack from the president of the Bude-Stratton branch, Mr Hugh Craig Harvey, who said at the branch annual dinner “I take violent exception to the slur being put on the Legion at the moment. I am very proud to be a member and terribly proud to be your president.”

Mrs Joyce Mary Hart is seeking re-election as Cornwall County Councillor for the Launceston Division. Her two challengers in next month’s election are Mr Clifford William Parsons and Mr George Thomas.

A new mini-bus was officially handed over to Holsworthy Secondary School by Mrs Helen Lancaster, chairman of the Community School Council and the Parent-Teacher Association. It was received on behalf of the school by Rev Alfred Wood, vice-chairman of the governors.

At the annual meeting of Boscastle WI the following officers and committee were elected: President, Mrs V Pritchard; secretary, Miss C Olde; treasurer, Mrs E Brewer; home and country secretary, Mrs A Billing; committee, Mesdames J Snowdon, E Edwards, M Davis and M Phelps.

Kilkhampton Primary School won the Bude-Stratton and District Junior Schools Road Safety Quiz. In the winning team were Clifford Jones, Christopher Braund, Hatti Lane and Derek Lane.

March 23, 1963

Bude and Stratton urban council meeting on Friday received a report of a meeting of the fishing committee at which it had been felt insufficient protection had been given to the fish life in the canal. It was recommended that the council be asked to provide complete protection to safeguard the fish life in the canal.

Mr Reg Walter, who has been bandmaster of the Launceston municipal band for 26 years, has been honoured by the National Brass Band Association for 50 years’ service to brass bands. He was made an honorary life member.

An 18-year-old youth was detained in hospital with lacerations at the back of his head after his motor-cycle was in collision with the castle wall in St Thomas Road, Launceston. He was David Cock; of 5, Dutson Terrace, Launceston.

March 21, 1953

The late Mr C Kivell, of Trevalgas, Poughill, retired auctioneer and surveyor, joint senior partner of Kivell and Sons, of Holsworthy, Stratton and Bude left £29,260 gross (£28,886 net).

Lifton Farmers Group have had outstanding successes in the Devon agricultural quiz competition and last week with seventeen and a half marks more than their nearest rivals Lifton won again. Team members were Messrs R J Blatchford, H Robbins, P Hart, N H Rundle and Mesdames P Lancaster and M Perkins.

When Mr F Luxton, of Ivy Cottage, Hallwill, was digging in his garden on Wednesday week he found the wedding ring of his daughter (Mrs H Watson) which she lost in August 1947.

Last week Mrs Parson, of Hurdon Cottages, Launceston, was proceeding to her home accompanied by Miss M Baker when they were passed by a man riding a bicycle. It is believed that the man then came from behind and caught hold of Mrs Parsons who fell to the ground. Miss Baker went down the road screaming which attracted the attention of Mr and Mrs Gilbert Frain their nearby cottage. Coming up the road a little way they were just in time to see the man run away.

March 20, 1943

Previously missing, now prisoner of war: Cpl Horace Walters, RAF, of Mount Wise, Launceston; LAC Frederick Sidney Sampson, of 14, Valentine Row, Callington; Garfield Edward Hamley, of King’s Hill, Bude. There has been no news of any of them since the fall of Singapore 12 months ago.

Children of Coads Green School have collected the greatest amount of waste-paper per pupil not only for their own district, but also for the whole of Cornwall. They have been presented with Waste-Paper Recovery Association’s Challenge Cup and a replica by Mr Lea. The school captains, Irene Heron and Owen Rowe, received the cup.

A St John Nursing Cadet enrolment ceremony was held at Camelford last week. The girls have been trained by their officer, Mrs J Braund. Mr C S Moyse also has a class of boys well advanced in their first aid course so that it is hoped to start an ambulance cadet division also this year.

Wadebridge Food Control Committee is complaining that as there are not enough sweets in local shops to meet the ration of three ounces per person per week, the ration generally should be reduced to two ounces.

March 21, 1933

Week St Mary Fair and Prize Day on Tuesday had a record entry of 200 Devon cattle, 12 cows and calves and 16 pens of sheep. Forward store cattle made £16 10s to £22 5s per head.

Beating Polperro 2-1 in the final at Bodmin, Tintagel football team have won the championship of the Eastern Division. The successful team: L Cann, Fry, F Bluett, Larry Cann, Dawe, Cory; Allen, Menhenick, Grose, Clime, Dangar, Climo scored both Tintagel’s goals.

Food prices dropped 11 per cent from 1931 to 1932. In the past year they have dropped a further night and a half per cent and are now at pre-war levels. Fruit and vegetables have dropped the most, 26 per cent and meat is down by 14 per cent.

March 24, 1923

The new Rector of Lezant, the Rev Canon Wright, was inducted by the Bishop of Truro on Tuesday week. The late Rector of Lezant, the Rev Rowland Cardwell, died in Surrey at the age of 74. The remains were brought to Lezant, the interment being conducted by the Rev Canon Wright, who was instituted Rector in the afternoon.

A parish meeting at Launcells, convened and presided over by Mr Treleaven, passed a resolution petitioning the education authorities to alter the time of the opening of say schools from 9am to 9.30am while summertime is in operation.

Sir George Croydon Marks, MP for North Cornwall, has been appointed chairman of committee in the House of Commons and will act as deputy speaker.
