PARTNERS and customers at TSB in Bude have raised a total of £1,486 for their local charity partner, Bude Surf Life Saving Club, since the partnership began in January 2015.

Bude Surf Life Saving Club provides a voluntary service to the public and assists the professional lifeguards throughout the summer season. Throughout its over 60-year history, the club has been completely self-financing.

Fund raising activities include regular demonstrations of life saving techniques and the popular traditional Poldark Fayre, which is enjoyed annually by locals and tourists.

On Christmas day, more than 500 swimmers take part in the annual Mike Moyle swim, which usually attracts an audience of a couple of thousand people.

During the partnership, TSB in Bude organised numerous fundraising events such as cake sales, a ‘guess the baby’ competition, a quiz night and an Easter raffle.

With TSB’s new charity partnerships due to begin from September 2016, TSB in Bude have extended thanks to Bude Surf Life Saving Club for the fantastic work the organisation does within its local community, and their support as its first local charity partner.

In May 2016, TSB asked local communities across Britain to nominate the local charity that they would like their local TSB to support next, receiving over 25,000 nominations from people across local communities in Britain.

Melanie Dymond, bank manager at TSB Bude, said: “Our Local Charity Partnership programme is all about working in partnership to help support the local causes that are the lifeblood of many communities across Britain.

“It’s been fantastic to support Bude Surf Life Saving Club, which is close to our hearts here in Bude, and everyone working here has found our partnership really rewarding.

“As our partnership with Bude Surf Life Saving Club comes to an end, I’d like to wish them the very best for the future, and I look forward to announcing our new local charity partner in September.”

Janey Henwood, chairperson at Bude Surf Life Saving Club, added: “It’s been great to work in partnership with TSB. Their support has had a really positive impact on our charity and the work we do here in Bude.”

The Surf Life Saving Club has also been boosted by the news that it has been announced as Sainsbury’s Bude store’s new local charity of the year for 2016 and 2017.

Sainsbury’s announcement followed an online and in-store customer vote.

This year’s local charity scheme began at the end of May, when colleagues shortlisted a maximum of three charities to be put forward to the customer vote. Bude Surf Life Saving Club received the most votes, and will now receive a year’s worth of fundraising and promotion from the store.

The store team will be fundraising for the charity through various events.

Ms Henwood said: “We’d like to thank everyone who voted for us. Becoming Sainsbury’s ‘Bude Local Charity of the Year’ will make a huge difference to our charity. We’re looking forward to the partnership and working closely with the colleagues at the Bude store.”

Peter Keighley, store manager at Sainsbury’s Bude, added: “I’d like to say congratulations to Bude Surf Life Saving Club. It’s great to be working with a new charity this year. My colleagues are really excited about the partnership.”

The local charity scheme is now in its eighth year, and has raised over £11-million to support local charities since 2009.
